Wilson comparator idea?

Ray I tried it this morning with the JB comparator. I put the stem still in the head on the base with the bullet in the stem. I could not get a good reading! I tried spinning it like I do normally with the comparator and it was all over the place. So my conclusion is stick with the Comparator.

dannyjbiggs I was going to get to you after I told Ray what I found! And No you didn't let the Cat out of the bag, they have been around for years. Just couldn't get one made until this year. I have one for shoulder bump, but Finally have a Friend that will be making me one. I'll be more interested in using it to get the OAL. Will be nice to put a round in the rifle and actually knowing where you're at, but the drawback is as the barrel wears you can still use it for a comparator.

Best comparator I've seen is one that a fellow shooter made from a chunk of steel cut off the barrel blank he was chambering. He merely chucked it up, ran the same reamer into it, then turned it back on each end until he had it just long enough to use as a comparator. Long enough so the bullet didn't stick out on the "bore end" and short enough on the "throat end" that he could use it not only as a comparator but also measure his seating depth on a finished cartridge. If the "gauge" touched the case the bullet was seated too deep.

Oh well...cat's outa the bag...that is, for using a piece of barrel as a "comparator body" with the rifling cut away, in part, and arresting the bullet at its bearing surface...+1. Dang me! (Probably not that much of an original idea though?)

If the rifling is cut away, you can use any piece of metal to make the gauge, couldn't you?

Might read it again, Erik; just a certain depth of the rifling is cut out, some rifling remains to stop the bullet from passing completely through. Or, am I misinterpreting your question. ??? My apology if I am? :'(

Joe, for "OAL" sorting, I use a comparator body more in line with what Erik's hung up on. An upright cylinder (aluminum is best) that snugly fits the bullet bearing surface with bullet tip protruding, that holds the bullet perfectly verticle, with the base of the bullet passed thru and touching a hard base under the cylinder. ALL positioned directly under a pointer gauge with a flat pointer tip. This is used in conjunction with a modified Sinclair Arbor Press rigged to hold the pointer gauge above the comparator. The apparatus is a much more sturdy version of the Sinclair Bullet Sorting Stand. (Sorry that I could not transport a picture of the device herein, as you see, a picture would be worth a thousand words!)

P.S. The "barrel" based comparator is for realistic "BTO" measurements, etc.

Danny, my point was that the bore of a 7mm barrel is .276 or .277 depending on the manufacturer. So technically, you don't need a barrel stub, the same can be accomplished with any piece of metal as long as the dimensions are the same as that of the barrel. Lets not forget that barrel makers start with solid round shaft before they become barrels.

Thanks for clarifying, Erik...I'm responding to you thru a deluge of tears :'( :'( :'( :'( ! So, technically and innovatively, you don't need a new piece of any other metal either , and it's more economical to use the barrel stub. That piece of metal has already been paid for, and presents a useful purpose for old used up barrels. But anyway, I'm still pumping tears :'( :'( :'( :'( .

Aw right Erick, I want to come back and say something in complete privacy to you concerning what we were just talking about on comparator metals...I really shouldn't...but, I'm going to do it, painful as it is, anyway. IF ANYONE ON THIS FORUM OR ANY OF OUR COMMON SHOOTING BUDDIES COME BACK ON ME FOR THIS, I WILL SURELY KNOW THAT IT WAS YOU THAT RELEASED MY FOLLOWING COMMENT: It really was not MY used-up barrel that was used to make MY comparator out of a barrel stub. Rather, it was HIS used-up barrel to make my comparator. Sooooooooo, HE was able to re-coupt HIS costs on HIS barrel; not me on mine. Remember, zipped lips, right? :-[
