Some very impressive shooting yesterday in the HG class. You really need to be on top of your game if you want to win up there!

on the results page, notice how 5" groups are not winning The first relay had six 5-inch groups, there's a handful of 4" groups throughout the day, and multiple 100 scores. Needless to say, my 16" group (69 score) wasn't cutting it I now know that one should not try a new load in a match

I'm honored to shoot next to all of these guys, and privileged to have their knowledge at my disposal.

I googled it but couldn't get anywhere.

At WIlliamsport, they shoot LG on Saturday, and HG on Sunday. I was only able to make the HG match, even though my rig is a LG

The 300's and big boomers really seem to dominate but the 6.5-284's did pretty well too.

It's strange that so many people say the 6x47 is hard to tune and keep tuned but judging from the scores a few shooters must have learned how to make them work.

Also interesting is that even at this level of shooters there was a fairly wide deviation from smallest to largest groups going from 4 0r 5 to to over 14 inches even in the same relay and wondered if that was a function of variable conditions and good wind or mirage reading from the winners?

To be honest, a lot of the deviation is due to speed, and load development.

The guys who shoot fast (and I mean FAST!) are usually printing the smaller groups. Also, if your tune isn't spot-on for the conditions that day, you're going to get vertical dispersion on the target.

My group was one of the largest that day, but it wasn't due to lack of speed or the load... it was my lack of attention to cleaning the barrel. I had a crbon ring in the throat that created 16" of verticla on the target. After the match I shot the same load into a 5" 10-shot group (the smallest I've ever shot at 1K). The point here, is that the groups that did open up to give 12"+ groups (while others were shooting 5" groups) may have been caused by something dumb like my mistake, or any other variable.

One guy that day (i forget who it was) actually shaved the side of the bullet on his 10th record shot, as he was loading it into the action (started closing the bolt as the case was only half way in the port). He shot it anyway... it hit a few inches outside of his group, taking it from a 4" or 5" group to an 8" or 9" group. Stuff happens...
