Acquiring an ACP/Long Colt Super Red Hawk 3.5".
I have the acp heads covered in house but need suggestions for the LC.
No plans yet to be in bear country so only longer range paper killin', just maybe a deer, maybe. Not a big deer hunter or venison eater.
Advice for brand, composition, type is welcomed.
I've loaded thousands acp on a Star Tool, Sq Deal B.
I'll thank All in advance for your input. Tom

"HEAD" was new to me till a year or so back. On some boards, it is common vernacular. Yes, projectile.

I use a 255gr RNFP lead bullet over 14.6 gr of 2400 in my Single Action Army Colt, to mimic the look of the "old days". I am sure a Super Red Hawk will handle a stiffer load than a SAA.

Does your mention of Super Red Hawk 3.5" mean that your pistol only has a 3.5" barrel? If it does then stick with ACP loads for higher velocity because you will not gain anything with 45 Colt because you don't have enough barrel to burn more powder. You can use heaver bullets in a Colt case. Best all around bullet I have found for the 45 Colt is the 250 gr Hornady XTP. It is designed to work with the 800 to 1000 fps muzzle velocity depending on barrel length, of the of the original Colt safe pressure. 8 grs Unique powder will get you there. I have a 5 1/2" Ruger Black Hawk 45 Colt and run a load of H110 that does 1200 fps with this bullet and 1100 fps with the 300 gr Speer JSP that is something to behold when it strikes living things. I carry the 300 gr load in it while bow hunting for black bear protection.

Fortunecookie45lc has some great YouTube videos covering 45lc loads and bullets that may answer your questions and provide some additional data. Unique, 2400, and trail boss are all popular depending on application. I dont hunt so I use unique a lot because it's so versatile and I keep a lot of it around for just that reason.

Words do not make the man, but they do proclaim him (in this case) to be careless.

Equally reasonable would be assuming that a 'head' is a case, since that's where the headstamp resides.

We could go on to correct the grating use of 'Long Colt' vis a vis the 45 Colt cartridge, but that would splitting whiskers at this point. It's historically inaccurate, but has been in erroneous use for so long, many people don't notice.

You are certainly welcome to your personal vision for your .45 ACP/.45 Colt combination, but I think you are limiting the usefulness of such a combination.
.45 ACP cartridges perform best with relatively fast powders (Bullseye, 700X and a long list of others) with 185 - 230 grain bullets.
.45 Colt cartridges shine with slower powders from Unique through 2400 using bullets from 185 through 300 plus grains and loads can be concocted that can rival .44 Magnum velocities in an appropriately strong firearm. Best balance lies between 250 -300 grains and hit like a sledgehammer.
Limiting yourself to a "one size fits all" approach to the two cartridges does yourself and the cartridges in question a big disservice.
Again, not judging your motives, but I don't understand limiting yourself. Either way, best of luck with your decision.
