Will I need to bush firing pin , rem 700 if I go 6x47 L?

I already have a 6.5 x 47 Lapua on a Defiance action and really like the cartridge.

I'm thinking of building a 6x47 Lapua on a Rem 700 SA that came as a .243 win. Will I have to bush the FP??

If it didn't need bushing in 243, then it will not need to be bushed for any other caliber.

I'd heard that the Lapua ctg had issues with primers flowing into the FP hole. And in my head at least.... I think I recall reading about shooters having that issue.

Why I was wondering about it.

I have a 6.5 X47 on a Rem 700 short and I get primer flow/cratering but most 700 based builds with factory bolts seem to do the same regardless of cartidge. Is it an issue or just a cosmetic flaw ? I tend to think its not really a problem but if it bothers you have it bushed. I plan on sending mine to Gre-Tan to get an extractor installed and since it'll already be there get the firing pin bushed as well. If I didn't want the extractor changed I'd live with it.

Where in MT ? I'm in Cody...we have casual precision/midrange shoots here and are trying to get MR F-Class as well. Keith

Up near Great Falls, MT Keith.

We are nearing completion on a 1000 yd range, just north of Gt Falls, at the Shooting Sports complex. Hoping to do some Highpower and F-Class later in 2015 and for sure in 2016. We also shoot a casual 675-1260 yds steel shoot each Wednesday aftn from May to November.

My shooting partner and I shot at the state LR match in Missoula this past Sept. ANother range having F matches will be great !

Ha Ha Ha! You may not think we are so great when you experience the WIND conditions.

Gt Falls is consistently in the top ten Windiest Cities listing. Very tough at times.

When we are UP for shoots I will surely post a notice here as well as a few other sites.

I shot .308 in a rem 700 and didn't need the firing pin bushed but when I went to the 6.5X47L I had to have it bushed . Maybe your results will be different. If you need a smith recommended with good turn around time let me know.

I'm running one on a Defiance receiver with a large firing pin, no cratering. On a Remington 700, there will probably be cratering. Id send it out to Greg Tannel and not look back. For the money he charges, it's a steal.

Ive got two of them currently....going to have one bushed that I just had a new barrel put on and the other will be rechambered to 6mm creedmoor when I get done fireforming more brass in this barrel. I am getting alot of primer flow as well.

When you say you "had"to get it bushed, was this because the Lapua was actually piercing primers or your smith just recommended it?

I started with a 6.5x47 in a Barnard (which will never have an issue in this regard) then built a 6x47L on a trued 40X. The pin is std and hasn't looked like piercing with 450s

Mine does crater but doesn't pierce a 450. I am sending a couple bolts off next week. I definitely don't have to get them done but it's more mental than anything.

What 'll it cost to do this, and the turn around time? is the complete bolt all that needs to ship?

You should have your bolt bushed regardless. It will handle pressures better and you won't have to worry about primer flow.

I think the reason you hear people saying that you "have to" or "should" bush the firing pin is because a good amount of people tend to run this cartridge at very high pressures and end up piercing primers.

This mirrors my thinking as well.......

Bushing the firing pin serves another purpose as well; the tip of the firing pin is fully supported for the entire length of travel.

I built a couple 6 and 6.5 Lapuas on the FN SPR actions and HAD to bush the fp. The FP on those was a full .080" or a tad over and even on starting loads I would get blanked primers. Perfect little circular disks punched out of the primer the diameter of the firing pin hole. I bushed both bolts and turned the firing pins down to match and have not had a lick of issues afterwards. May or may not be needed on a remmy but I would probably do it anyway. On one bolt I only went down to .070" I believe but that was more than enough to still solve the problem.

Are the aftermarket bolts such as a Pacific Tool & Gauge built to tolerances that eliminate the need to go through this pin hole bushing process? Is this why people install aftermarket bolts?

Thanks,
Trevor
