Will faster then 8 twist barrel affect accuracy with Berger 105VLD, 105BT,etc???

I have the following barrels chambered in 6 dasher that were intended to be used for Berger 105 Hybrid's:

Broughton 7.3 twist
Krieger 7.5 twist
Brux 7.8

I would like to try shooting Berger 105 VLD, 105BT, and 108BT bullets in these barrels but was wondering if the fast twist rate will affect accuracy. I have generally shot these bullets in an 8 twist barrel with great success. Just curious if others have noticed any advantage or disadvantage to shooting these bullets in a faster twist barrel.

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Will fast twist barrels affect accuracy???

I would think that the Brux 7.8 would be about perfect combo but any of the three should serve you well ;)

If I was going to try 105 Hybrid I would try the 7.5 Krieger. I couldn't get the Hybrid to shoot in an 8 and most of the guys I know didn't do very good with an 8 twist. Maybe the 7.5 would shoot better. I got the 105 VLD to shoot great in an 8 twist. Matt

That's what I have on order from Kreiger, Matt... 30" Heavy Varmint 7.5 twist 4 groove. Should have it in May, according to Kreiger. The 105 Hybrids are shooting great in my 8 twist Bartlien, I suspect they will work better in the 7.5 twist.

I understand the Hybrids will probably work better in a 7.5 twist compared to an 8 twist. I'm more concerned with shooting the 105 VLD, 105BT, and 108 BT in the faster twist barrels. The gold standard for these bullets has always been an 8 twist. Is there any reason to think these bullets won't shoot as good in a 7.3, 7.5, or 7.8 twist barrel though is what I'm wondering.

A half inch of twist won't cause you any trouble with a dasher. While I would use an 8tw, your 7.5tw barrels will work just fine

Plug it into the Berger Twist Rate Calculator:

http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/

It seems to think a 7.5 twist is just fine with those bullets, if you plug in a realistic dasher velocity.

The problem I see with the Berger calculator is it only tells you if the bullet is stable. It does not tell you if you are spinning the bullets too fast. I inputted a 7 twist at 4000 fps and it stated it was stable!!!

Over stabilizing?? is that like having to much money?

I encourage you to reach out to Bryan Litz in an email or PM and ask him his thoughts about the topic. The nice thing about Bryan is he can explain some very complicated "goings on" if you will to stupid people like me. He can also ramp it up if your smarter than the average internet poster and get into the math of it all. He is really approachable and has a great gift of explaining things.

Whats the worst thing that could happen? You learn something new? You don't agree?

Good luck

Yup... exactly the same.

You can "over spin" a bullet (it flies into pieces parts from centripetal force), but you cannot over stabilize a bullet, because bullets are never truly stable, they just become more and more resistant to being diverted.

Apply enough sideways force to the nose or tail, and they will turn - the faster they spin, the more force it takes to turn them.

Certainly you can overspin a bullet--the whole point of matching a barrel twist to the weight (length) of bullet is to try to minimize the number of rotations of a stabilized bullet on the way to the target in order to give imperfections fewer chances to pull the projectile off course. Twist rates recommended by Berger are always going to be in the neighborhood of the slowest that will stabilize the bullet. They cannot tell you that you might be spinning too fast for obvious reasons.

Overstablized or overspun, the risk is the same, for the most part; the difference is only in semantics.

Yes, it will but most likely to your advantage.

I've shot all but the 108 in a 6XC/1:7.8 Bartlein to 1,000 yards with excellent results. The 108 I tried in a 1:7.5 Kreiger-barreled 6HAGAR spacegun but the 105VLD shot better.

Berger's Hybrid designs are longer than similar bullets so the faster twist'll help.

I have two 1:7.5's currently being prepped for 6XC's on two different actions.
