Anyone switching back to 8" after trying faster twist?

I know several of you have tried faster twist with bullets like the 105 hybrid and I'm curious about your thoughts. It's new barrel time and I'm waffling back and forth between a 7.5" and an 8". I've been shooting 108 Berger but would like to go back to 105Hs. This is for a 6 Dasher. Thanks.

Jeff

I was not able to stabilize Berger 105 hybrids in my 8 twist during cool conditions, so I got a 7.5 twist. I am now able shoot the 105H at 25 degrees F and am able to get the groups under 0.25 at 100 yards.

Good shooting!
Bill

i brought the 105gr hybrids to use in my 1;8 twist 6BR then i was told i need a 1.775 twist or something as i was 3% out when using 1;8 twist
well cant say i have found any problems yet with 105gr hybrids out of my 1;8 krieger barrel have shot 1.865 inch groups at 500m or 547yards
i'm pushing them out at 2940fps with 30.6gr of 2208/varget

And youve won a fly patch

Is there something I'm missing about the hybrids in a 1-8 twist? I'm having a new 6BR built for f open on a 30' 1-8 Bartelin. Will it still stabilize them? I shot 107 smk and 105 vld's with my last 6BR with a 1-8 with no issues at all. Just making sure I don't have an issue

My question, what would there be to gain by going to a slower twist?
Except for the simple fact that 8-twist are more readily available, I see no reason to want slower.
Even with lighter/shorter bullets, I get exceptional performance from 8 and faster's........
My 2-Cents

That is my line of thinking, but I since the topic has died down a bit I was just looking for some affirmation from some of you more acomplished shooters that have spent time behind both.

I have a 30" 8 twist Brux barrel, shooting Berger 105 Hybrids at 2870 fps and the Berger Bullet Twist Rate Calculator says I should be shooting a 7.5 twist barrel. The 8 twist with my variables inputted into the calculator comes out to marginal stability but at 7.5 twist it says it is stable. The calculator shows the 105 VLD's more stable at 8 twist than the 105 Hybrids. Go to the calculator, put in your variables and see what it says. My next Brux barrel will be a 7.5 twist since I shoot mostly 105 Hybrids. So far I have no complaints or issues with the 8 twist and 105 Hybrids but since the calculator recommends a 7.5 twist I will try it to see if there is an improvement. The box that the 105 Hybrids come in indicates 8 twist or faster.

Remember the environment issue. If I remember my school geography lessons right, Comagutsa's Perth, Western Australia location is a tad :) warmer usually than the Perth, central Scotland that I grew up in.

The 8-inch twist provides the full 1.5 optimum Sg coefficient of stability value at 80-deg F 2,000 ft ASL altitude from 3,000 fps MV. On thne other hand shooting on a cold winter's day in North America at say 20-deg F in anticyclonic high pressure on or close to sea level drops the Sg to below 1.2 which could produce a visible deterioration in short range groups, and would definitely affect bullet performance at longer distances.

Maybe your barrel just doesn't like this bullet.

;D yeah i did notice that on the berger twist calculator, when i put in 40 Degrees C (summer) it said it was ok but when i put in 15 degrees C (avg winter) it said it wasn't ok ..lets hope it doesn't get too cold in Perth this winter and we are only just above sea , well hope it doesn't get cold as you guys haha

Well it sounds like no one who has tried a faster has felt that they liked the 8 twist better so that question has been put to bed for me. :) I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you.

Off Topic: Laurie, I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to participate in a driven Grouse shoot very close to your backyard. We stayed at place called Cromlix House, which I now hear is a hotel. It was located southwest of Perth and north of Stirling. The memories of smelling the blueberries while stalking deer, and watching the local Scouts work the birds down from a ridge which seemed like miles away are permanently etched. As a bonus, Christies held a high grade gun auction at Gleneagle that I was able to attend. I was hoping to find a Dickson .20 that a pauper could afford, but that was the wrong place for that. ;) Beautiful scenery and friendly, gracious hosts... It doesn't get any better.

Yes, it's very nice part of the country round there. I live south of the border these days, but always feel nostalgic when I drive up to Perthshire and approach the city from that direction with the Ochil Hills to the South (right side) and foothills of the Grampian mountains on the north (left side) with the River Earn down below in the valley.

When I was boy, Gleneagles Hotel was owned by British Rail then a state owned company and its facilities and gold course were available cheaply to railway employees which my father was. It and other railway hotels were amongst the first state assests to be sold to the private sector by Mrs Thatcher's governments in the 1980s and whilts it opened the door to much needed capital investment to develop the business, it took it into new price levels. The local joke was that if you arrived dying of thirst at the hotel's door and asked the doorman for some water he'd fetch you a glass but charge £5 for the privilege. My old man used to play gold there regularly but not after privatisation. You'd certainly not find many gun bargains in any sale held on those premises! :)
