will another man's rem 700 barrel fit mine?

There seem's to be a lot of good barrels that could be had for a resonable price for the rem 700 action. My question is will a good used custom barrel mount right over to my trued action or will they have to go back to the gunsmith shop for final fitting?

Depends on how lucky you are rather they will fit or not.
Most will not have the lettering, or the sight holes in the right spot, and they may not have the correct head spacing.
if they are the same caliber your chances are better, but it needs to be checked for safety by someone who knows how to do that....

Thats what i figured, common sense trumps luck. Thanks for the info preacher, you're a gentleman and a scholar.;)

It really is just luck.

If you have a way of checking the shoulder to base dimension of a case then you can figure out how to work around it. If the headspace is a few thou short then you just bump the shoulder back. If the headspace is a few thou long then you fireform the brass to the new chamber and adjust the sizing die to suit.

Headspace [imo] is only super critical when shooting factory ammo. Even then, when resizing the brass I don't feel confident unless I can measure the shoulder bump.

I just screwed a new .222 barrel onto to my mod 600. The new barrel, also very old) was supposedly the exact same but the contour turned out to be heavier.

I screwed it on and the bolt barely closed on the go gage. The marking are inside the stock now though. An easy fix is to grind a few thou off the recoil lug if it's too long. Otherwise, you need a reamer.

Besides the headspace and the barrel markings and sight holes, there are a few other things that can go wrong. You have to consider the bolt nose fit in the barrel tenon and the clearance needed between front of bolt and rear of barrel. Just when you think you have taken care of one thing, another will pop up.

Sizing brass to fit, grinding recoil lugs and stuff like that are quick fixes for something that should be taken care of properly.

If you are lucky, a replacement barrel will screw right on and everything will be perfect. I've had a few like that myself. But don't bet on it, especially if the action has been trued such as Big Red's.

JMHO

Another, quick fix) has been a application of shim washers between the lug and the receiver.
Grinding recoil lugs is scary at best with out a surface grinder thats good to below 1/10,000.. and you can buy a lot of lugs for the price of one of those.
Cheechako's thought's are as good as they get, as always......

Boltfluter on here is making recoil lugs and I think he could make you a custom thickness if you decide to go that route.

If your action has been trued, most likely the receiver threads have been opened up to some extent. I know some gunsmiths that just go .010 over as a simple standard, even if it will clean up with less. That is going to leave a lot of slop between the original barrel and the new receiver threads. Not a good situation IMHO.

I know you will end up spending some of the money you saved on a bargain barrel, but if the tenon end has enough full diameter left, just cut off the old threads, rethread to fit your action and rechamber in whatever caliber you wish.

EDIT: I really have to start looking at the date on these things, but if anyone out there is interested, my opinion still stands:rolleyes:
