Will a 7.5 or 8twist work w/77LRX in the 22 Creedmoor

Want to shoot the Barnes 77 LRX for deer. Some say it will stabilize in an 8 but I want to be sure. Would 7.5 twist work? I've heard too many horror stories about going to a true 7 twist. Could you guys help a guy out? Thanks, powdr

Don't overspin with the bigger case 224 bullets. It only ends up in disappointment. Stick with just enough stability to keep the bullet accurate. Very different from a 223 cartridge bullet. You can run a 6 twist and never blow up a heavy bullet. An 8 twist is what I run in my 22-250AI for 75-80s. Never lost a bullet yet. If I went with a 7-7.5, I think the results would have been different. Sorry I can't speak for the 77 LRX but I'm sure many here will show up with their opinions.

Been shooting a 22 creed with 1/8 twist for 3 years, using hornady 75 eldm and the occasional sierra 80 gr, no issues with stabilizing those. Cant speak to the barnes 77 but my opinion is you would be fine with 1/8.

Nosler 77gr Custom Comps, Sierra 77gr & 80gr SMKs, shoot fine in my 22 Creed, 8T, 26" X-Caliber.

I would give Barnes a call. That 77 LRX is pretty long compared to lead core bullets, which usually implies faster twist is required.

Like the others, I have seen 77 TMK and 80 SMK etc, run fine in the 7.5, 7.7, and even 8 twist, but I'm not sure this one shows good margin. These 77 LRX are roughly 1.175" long with the plastic tip. Copper solids are long for their weight class.

Here is the estimate from the Berger Stability Calculator at 8 twist

And here it is at 7 twist.

It doesn't have a jacket to blow up, so I would ring them and see what they have done with it in 22 Creedmoor before I invested in a barrel for such a long bullet. I think if you only shoot at altitude, you would get by, but if you shoot near sea level, I would double check with them.

I have only seen it in 5.56 and 22-250 with 7 twist where it ran fine. Coyotes and pigs hated it.
Good Luck.

The length may require a faster twist for sure. The core being hollow still with the poly tip gets the bullet longer to make the weight thus making it longer than other 77-80 grain lead core bullets. While anything is possible when not being a solid copper bullet, fragmentation is very very unlikely. It's still a solid copper bullet and no jacket with having a hollow cavity(not a complete solid core, but all copper). Only thing I would say is, if you go with a 7 twist because it's necessary for this bullet, you'll have issues down the road using traditional jacketed lead core bullets pushed too fast.

The 22 Creedmoor I built has a 1:7.5 twist in a proof research barrel. It shoots 69 to 80 grain bullets with no problems and I never had a bullet blow up. I shoot mainly Sierra bullets and I keep them at reasonable speeds. I follow the Peterson Brass pressure test loads data to be safe. Some of the internet load data out there I think would destroy a rifle…way too high pressure loads.

Don’t know if this helps, but I’ve been shooting 80gr JLK VLDs in an 8 twist with no issues.

The bullets measure 1.125”

I’m shooting a 1-7” and 95smk at 3100 without issues but i have only shot 400 rounds. I have personally seen the 95s blow up out of a different 1-7”. I think the all around best twist would be 7.5”-7.7”

Mine has a 1-7 twist X-Caliber barrel, I shoot the 75 - 80 - 88gr ELD-M's out of it. Never had any issues with over spinning them. My barrel is only 20" long because I shoot it suppressed, so my velocities are a little slower than the longer barrels.
