Will a 22LR ricochet back from hitting a tree at 10 yds distance?

Back in my USPSA days we used a few plastic 55-gallon drums as props. Hearing a bullet go around and around the inside of those drums when someone hit one was pretty unnerving.

Old oak blowdown,
Bark fallen off, bare trunk.
16 ga stevens breakbarrel,
20 yards, kerppow,
Face full of pellets.
Just started wearing glasses that month. 13 yrs old maybe
Very surprised, It hurt.

My friend could shoot anything he picked up extremely well, shotguns, pistols, rifles, and with or without sights. I saw him make some amazing shots. No idea where it came from, his hand/eye coordination was great.

My older brother was like that. Best instinctive shooter I’ve ever seen. I never had the knack at all.

Growing up, I was almost the best shot among the kids in the neighborhood -- EXCEPT for one guy. And he was probably three times better than me with everything he picked up. He was (and still is) just crazy good. He is magical with aerial shots, and I don't mean shotgun only. Some guys just got it. jd

Back in the late 60s when I was in basic they had us flipping little red tin discs in the air then another guy would shoot at them with a bb gun with no sights. Couple of inner city boys who had never fired anything but zip guns(their story) killed those little discs. None of us guys whom had shot all our lives could hit them . That drove me nuts back then. Maybe it still does.

Open water and ricochets go together like peanut butter and jelly. Many people don’t know that unfortunately. Don’t ask me how but I found that out at a very young age. Yes, young boys are dumb.

I shot a nickel one time and got shrapnel in my hand.

Had a changeable cylinder 22/mag shear off a curl and it in went in my neck only to come out 10 yrs later.

Anything can happen.

With the greatest respect I say...
If you insist on shooting anything without a soft/proper backstop - wear glasses.
Secondly. Don't shoot trees. :D It breaches the bark and makes them susceptible to insects and disease.

And don't forget the twists and turns of the magic bullet from Dallas in 1963. Strange things happen with bullets once they leave a rifle.

Don’t shoot bowling pins with 22 or 17 rimfire.

Kid did this one day when I happened to be there. He came up to me and said some one was shooting at him. Bullets bounced off, went over his head and nailed the windshield on his big tall king ranch ford. Sticker was still in the back window.

I quit bowling pin shoots years ago after getting stung with jacket material one too many times.
