Will a 1-14 twist work for 53 gr Nosler Varmageddon?

Anyone tried these in a slow twist @ 3-3,500 fps at lower altitude? Have a few 1-14 twist barrels with throat erosion needing longer shank bullets for best seating depth.

Chuck

My 1:12 223 rem shoots them at 3500 fps well but would not stabilize the 53 vmax, I think the glatbase really helps, a 1:14 may be touch and go.

The slowest I've had the Ballistic Tip 53 V-geddons was a hair under 3400fps. They all made round holes in the target so are at least marginally stable. According to the NWS map I shoot at 800 ft altitude. This in a plain old 700V 22-250 (14 is factory twist I believe).

I'm chasing a longer throat too. The Noslers are only into the case about .10". The slightly chunkier Hornady 53HP Match is seated deeper & shoots a bit better for me. Soon time for a new barrel.

I shoot them at about 3150fps, but my Rem is also a 1:12 twist. I could go faster, but I have not found a bullet that groups better in my rifle so no load development occurred. 90% of my shots, both ground squirrels and targets, are at less than 200 yards; it’s been fantastic for me. Most of my shooting is done at 1500-2500 elevation. Same rifle can’t group a 50gr Barnes VG much better than a shotgun, but that’s another topic.

I run 52gr SMK's in the 22-250 with normal .5" and below groups. I'm pretty sure it is a 1in14" Sorry, I'd check it, but its up at the farm in Ohio. Dad wont give it back. Just keeps asking for more ammo! LOL

not all of them are, it is not the weight but the length.

Chuck, the 55g Sierra lead tip blitz will serve you well, so will all 55g Sierra Flat base along with a 55g Hornady V max.

I have no experience with the 53g Varm, so I have no opinion either way.

Same with my Remington, though 40 grain lead-free ballistic tips with Exterminator, Varget, Accurate LT32 and W748 will all put them well under 1/2"- especially the last two powders. Twist is not fast enough to shoot the VG's.
