wife wants a build!

My wife loves to deer hunt and is tired of packing around one of my senderos, what is a good cartridge to go with? Shot ranges from 100 to 500 yards, something she can kill speed goats with too. I was thinking about the 6.5x47 but have never been around one ...how's the recoil?

The .260 is a 6.5-08 and the 6.5x47L is a close cousin. I think the 7-08, the .260 or the 6.5x47L (or the 6.5 Creedmore) would be a great choice.

If you're a handloader and tinkerer, 6BR. If not, .243. I like 85gr Barnes TSX, or 95gr Berger VLD for the longer shots.

If you go with something bigger on the .308 case (.260, 7-08, .308), consider a muzzle brake and some really good hearing protection.

Be sure that the stock fits and that the rifle isn't muzzle heavy.

You could go with the swede 6.5x55 . They don't seem to recoil terrible or a .243 fast twist using the 90 plus bullets. You can add a brake to any one of them to tame them for her.

I typed this at the same time the above poster did,LOL

For a low recoil and excellent performance you could go with a 250 AI. Shooting 100gr. bullets your only 200 fps behind a 25-06 but your using as much as 15-20 grs. less powder to do it.

Along the lines of jghh, I have a 6-6.5X47 that pushes the 105 gr. A-Max to 3130 fps w/40.5 grs. of powder from a 24" tube. My .243AI does 3200 fps w/48 grs. of powder from a 28" tube. Yes I could stand on it more but the Chucks hate it there! My point is to reduce recoil from the cartridge itself you must reduce bullet weight and powder charge weight. I've killed Whitetail at 438 yards with the 105 gr. A-Max and after seeing the terminal ballistics I wouldn't stop at 500 with it. JMHO

I hadn't thought about this one in a while. It or the 257 Roberts AI
Would be great ones to put on a list IMO

Personally I would set up a lightweight build in 6.5x47L as lapua makes match ammo and makes hunting ammo in this caliber so you could reload or if you wanted you could just buy a box each season confirm zero, drops, and go hunt. Plus you know that due to lapue making the ammo if you have a rifle built for their factory ammo you can attain a very high accuracy standard with the factory ammo and not have to reload unless you start to shoot a higher volume then the occasional hunt.

A 7-08 has as much recoil as a 308. I'd go 25-06 or one of the 6.5 mm flavores.

Sorry

I had two 308's, and have shot several 7-08's. I disagree.
My 7-08 with 140's has far less recoil.
All of these were in the 5lb. weight class.

I use a 6.5x47 Lapua for hunting, very light recoil. I shoot 123 gr AMAX at 3,000 fps from a 25" barrel.

6.5x47L would be a great choice. Deer aren't hard to kill and speed goats tip over even easier with one other factor, the wind. It doesn't take much to kill a goat, many great cartridges, but at 500 yards I personally would rule out many of them and shoot what ever works best in the wind. I shot my first one at 560 yards in Wyoming with a 300 WSM and was happy I had it. On a calm day I would use about anything.

My wife loved her Rem SPS .308 we bedded it in a McMillan stock. She loaded up some 155 amax and competed with it. Recoil is not an issue. Combo does weigh over 10 lbs....She does well and was quite content until she took it hunting. She dropped one deer with it and now she is ready to shorten the barrel(she found it a bit awkward for hunting). She likes the performance of the .308 but is ready to chamber a 6mm for competing.

We are avid reloaders!! And I was just wanting to add a 6.5 the arsenal!! BUT with all the talk about a fast twist 6mm got thinking I do have a lot of 243 and 6mm brass! !
