Why use a variable instead of a fixed scope?

I'm preparing to buy a scope for my long range gun,.260). The NightForce scopes certainly look great, but are expensive, as are the Mk 4 Leupold LR scopes. If I'm only shooting targets at 600 yards and maybe 1000 yards, what is the benefit to buying a more expensive variable power scope instead of a fixed power say in 30X.

Also, what is the benefit to buying a variable power Leupold Mk 4 LRT scope instead of the cheaper variable VX3 Long Range with side focus? The Mk4 goes for about $1,200 and the VX3 about $900.

I'm shooting with a 20MOA base, if it makes a difference. While I'd love to buy the NightForce, if it is overkill for what I need, I'd rather save my bucks.

Advice? Thanks, guys.

Dave, The biggest concern that I have with fixed power scopes is mirage on hot days at long distance. With the varible you would be able to knock the power back and shed some mirage but the fixed of course you would not. As far as quality goes, I own 2 12-42 NXS NF scopes, 2 MK IVs a 4.5 X 14 X 40 and a 8.5 X 25 X 50 and several Var X IIIs and a 45 X 45 Comp. I like all of them but when it comes right down to glass quality the only one of the Leupolds that will hang close to the NF is the 8.5 X 25 X 50.
I think the matched index glass on it may be the ticket. The 20 MOA base will help keep the reticle more centered in either scope as far as elevation is concerned. Just my observations and opinions may differ. Hope this helps. Bill

Some people prefer to be able to dial back on the power when the mirage is running heavy. It doesn't really change anything, but it can make the image somewhat less disturbing.

At either price, you're within spitting distance of a Nightforce. Why not spend the extra and be happy with what you bought. One thing to keep in mind: what's the value of a used Leupold VX-III and what's the value of a used Nightforce?

As stated, on a day when the mirage is kicking up a fixed power is about useless.
Nightforce is not considered overkill when you see what the used ones are bringing on the auction.
Nightforce scopes that sold new for $800.00 are bringing over a $1000.00 now.
You will never get more for a Leupold than you paid for it....

Thanks for the advice! It all sounds like a good excuse to get the good stuff. Time for me to start sifting through the dealers for a good price on a Nightforce!

Now you talking. Go ahead and get what you want. Bill Shehane at ScopeUsOut.com normally has the best price on the scopes that I have been interested in. Bill

A7Dave,
Go to Nightforce's site to decide on your reticle of choice.
You'll find checking the dealers prices that they will all be within a couple bucks.
It might boil down to who's got what in stock.
Don't dilly dally.I got Russ Hayden's last 12x42 DD for now.

Roger that! No dilly dallying here. My order is going in this week!
