why M.O.A?

Hoss,
I already wrote a comment to your last statment on page one, just to relize there was a page two, and it looks like you are all straightened out, I told you it was a no brainer :D Before long you will be calling shots for your friends. Good luck to @ the range my friend.

if my scope was at 3 1/2 i would turn it to 5 1/2? and the 12" low thing i wouldnt touch the scope i would just pull up 12 inches, thats kinda my problem i guess.

Actually, if you were at 3 1/2 and your spotter said you were 2 1/2 MOA low, you would have to click to 6 (3.5 + 2.5 = 6)

As far as holding 12" higher, it will only be an estimation, as there is no way you can hold exactly 12" higher, and if there is mirage, you would be lucky to get within 6 inches. Let's move further out, let's say you were shooting at 1200 yards, can you estimate 12" at that distance? Or would it be easier to come up
1 1/4 MOA on your scope?

Bottom line, if you are going to be shooting Long Range you need to learn MOA's, and it's easy once you understand why we use MOA's. Inches is like hours and MOA's are like days. We know how many hours are in a day, but we use days to set up appointments and to count down to an important date, not hours!

If you are still not 100% clear, let us know and ask away, we don't mind!

i had a hard time understanding also. my shooting partner just about beat me with my rifle before the light bulb went on.

i think erik gave the best anwser as to why moa vs inches. you would have to convert inches to moa anyway so why not just use moa.

it almost seems you are hung up on what the knob says 1/4 moa at 100 yds. i looked at my higher end scopes and they just say .25 moa

it's up to you to know what a 1/4 moa change is going to give you at the distance you are shooting.

take 200 yrds. 1/4 moa or one click will move you 1/2 in. a 1/2 moa or two clicks = 1in. 3/4 moa or three clicks = 1 1/2 in. 1 moa or four clicks = 2 in.

Guys, thankyou for this post! First off it corrected my perception of MOA, which honestly I only understood at 100 and 200 yds and after that it was skewed. I "now" have the correct perception and could confidently make scope adjustments at any given distance with 100% confidence. Now if only I could shoot with the same confidence, life would be good ;)!

Take hoss6br's example of 12" low at 500 yds. 1 MOA at 500 yds is 5" so take 12" divided by 5" which gives you 2.4 MOA, or hence 2.5 MOA adjustment on the scope, if said scope has 1/4 MOA adjustments!

i do shoot long range just ive never shot at paper at long range, so trying to see what 12 inches looks like at 600yds is generally not a problem for me, if my target was a woodchuck at 600 and i shot 12 inches low i know about how long a chuck is and most of the time my 2nd shot would kill the chuck, same with deer, but there is alot of difference hunting and paper shooting. thats why i wana learn moa it is faster and more precise, im getting a pretty good hold on it now, thanks to you guys that posted, now i just got go out and put it to use ;D

Hoss,
I am glad you are catching on, it took me a bit as well. Now my Gunsmith and longrange shooting partner want's me to change to mills, he gets frustrated with me because I am not smart enough to divide by 10, guess I am old school and can't or don't want to learn or change. I am kinda like you I understand a standing ground hog is say 12"" so if I miss and see to impact I will usually hit him on the second shot,or if I have a spotter and he says give me 3 minutes I know instantly what to do, but when he says give me a Mill I am like :-\ :P ??? Maybe I should stop being stubborn and do what you just did,..... Stop, Shut up, Listen , and Learn ;) Good luck @ the range Hoss.

thanks wayne, its funny you brought up mills, my dad was in the army fer 35 years and he was telling about mills when i said something to him about moa and if he knew anything about them. he didnt know much about moa but started to tell me about mills when i stoped him before my head exploded, lol. He baught me my first scope when i was 14 an old 12x unertal with target knobs and i thought i was in heaven! I mounted the scope on my trusty 243 rem 788 and went to work with it, i had all the clicks counted to 600yds! lol. the woodchucks im my hunting zone were in trouble! i probably scared more chucks then i killed but we had alot fun! i had never heard about moa till i starded getting into paper shooting and it does seem alot faster, more i learn about it the more i like it!

yup... you got it hoss
1 moa is 1 moa. the amount the distance in inches actually is will be different at 500 vs 1000yards. each click in your scope will effect your bullet the further away you are.
cheers,
doc
