Why is the .260 so dificult to tune?

Well folks, I have been reading this thread with intensity. I am in the throws of building a .260A.I. as I type this. According to my gunsmith he may be able to get to it this week.. If he does and I start loading in a week or two, I will post the results.. I will have a 1-8 / 27" Krieger on it with a sq. and trued Rem action and a 2oz Jewell. I have an idea that I am going to work on here. I have the 308 "Palma" brass that I have necked to .260. I want to see how the small primer pockets will work in a slightly overbore case, once it is fireformed to 40 deg. My goal is to push 142SMK's out of the 27" tube about 2885-2900 with e.s.'s at or under 12f.p.s. I have turned my necks to give me 4K chamber neck clearance. It will be throated to shoot 130-140 class bullets. I have studied this cartridge for a considerable time now and I have come to the conclusion that I will start with H4831SC. I am going to fireform with 46grs and once fireformed, work from there to "about" 48.5. With the small primer pockets associated with the Palma brass, I feel confident that getting a "higher node" will not compromise that brass. As I said, once I get going, I will give y'all periodic results...

I fired 29 shots with my 260 Rem yesterday. They all went where I aimed. A bit of difficulty reading the wind at 640 yds, but apart from that, the wind coach was spot on.

This was new Lapua brass with N165 behind some 140 gr A-Max.

The .260 Remmy is my favorite cartridge. Currently I have two Savages chambered in .260 Rem. - and I'm in the process of building a 3rd.

I haven't shot but 50 or 60 rounds of 140 grain bullets through them in total. The lighter bullets shoot just fine for me - anything from 123 grain down to 85 grain.

Benchrest competitor I am not, but the best group I have ever shot (with the .260) is with the pencil weight barrel on the Savage model 16 - 3/8" at 100 yards with the Sierra 85 grain hollow point.

Quite opposite conventional wisdom.

Both of my .260's shoot consistently better groups than either of my .17 hornets, which surprises the heck out of me.
