Why increase the freebore on 243?

I know this is an old thread but it is relevant still.

I am old and I know it. I have been a David Tubb fan for decades.

Long before the 6CM was a thing I was shooting DTAC's from a bolt gun and AR10. I used them in Silhouette for a long long time.

I am not advocating that anyone just getting into the game should go 243 Win. I am saying though that with a custom rifle a 243 with ELD bullets and a fast twist barrel can shoot inside of most other non-magnum chambering all day long until you get into some serious wind. I have used it for Silhouette and F Open for decades off and on!

Another cartridge that is really under utilized due to SAAMI slow twist rates and lack of much bullet development for decades is the 25-06. With the right bullets and twist rates the 25-06 is a long range beast with little recoil.

Another really great performer and not at all a barrel burner is the 6.5-06.

My Saami 243 Bartlein 5R will shoot under .5" and its an AR10. I think 2900 is plenty with the Berger 108.
I know this is an old thread (I apologize for being slow/late)….but I’m trying to get my mind wrapped around the Freebore for a .243 Win. AR10 and it sounds like urbanrifleman has plenty of experience with an AR in .243 Winchester.

I have been shooting 106 grain A-Tips loaded at 2.888” COAL out of a 1/7 twist X-Caliber .243 Win. 5R 20” Barrel. My current barrel has well over 2k rounds down it and it’s time to buy another one. Last Mid-Range match it did shoot a 199-10x but it will now randomly drop a shot…just as I was getting this load figured out.

My knee jerk thought it to buy another barrel just like it (same chamber/freebore) and use a Uni-Throat if I need to increase freebore.

Also, Contemplating going with a 6 Groove instead of the 5R Rifling.

Of course, with the new NRA AR-Tactical Rules aligned with the CMP Rules….it will be a 22” Tube instead of the current 20”.

What say you urbanrifleman?
