why does 1st round goes out 25-06

I would appreciate any assistance /advise on solving my problem. I'm wking on getting my 25-06 ready for my 9 year old grandson 1st hunt this year. During my 5 shot groups the first round Fly's at 3 o'clock 1/2"-3/4" away the point of impact. After that the other 4 rounds will group from .374" too .541" (4 shots).

Pretty common most guns need a fouling shot to settle in, just foul the barrel before you hunt, if your first shoot is only 1/2 to 3/4 inch out that isn't bad I wouldn't be concerned about a fouling shot myself if your only hunting at a reasonable distance.

Another thing I use HBN coated bullets in a target rifle and it doesn't seem to need a fouled barrel

Ditto. With a clean barrel, the first shot(s) often goes awry. In benchrest, I ALWAYS fire 2-3 fowlers first. In hunting, I fowl my barrel a few days before the hunt and protect the muzzle and barrel from moisture. My hunting 308 with a custom barrel requires about 5 shots before it shoots a true .5" group.

I always hunt on a fouled barrel. Matter of fact I never clean the bore of a rifle until the accuracy starts to fall off unless I am out in wet weather etc. I then foul with a few shots before I go hunting again. I will clean the chamber but not the bore until accuracy falls off. I have seen more damage done to a bore from too much cleaning than shooting it.

When I clean my barrel, (Browning 270 and Tika 223), I finish with an oil patch, followed by two clean patches, if rifles are going to be shot in the near future. With this routine, my first shot is very close. Good Luck! Rides Alone

I have a 223 Model 7 Remington that throws the first three shots to the right, about 1.5 inches from a clean barrel. After that, it shoots on zero with very respectable groups (i.e. .75 MOA) for a No. 1 contour barrel.

I've tried all manner of barrel prep and nothing seems to significantly change this condition. So I make sure I fire three fouling shots before I go hunting with it.

This is the only rifle I've ever own that throws the first three clean barrel shots that far off center. Most of my others shoot fairly true out of a clean barrel while others exhibit only a slight deviation from zero. That 223 Model 7 is most puzzling to me.

Had this happen with my Howa 25-06. Figured out the sporter barrel was so small that it heated up EXTREMELY fast when I loaded it with heaviest bullet for the twist with a relatively warm load. After a few rounds it would be too hot to shoot without risking bore damage.

Barrels/rifles all react differently. It is good to know point of impact for 1st shot on both a clean barrel/oiled barrel and a fouled cold barrel. For my big game hunting rifles I make sure the bore is fouled prior to hunting with them and have the rifles zeroed for the 1st cold bore shot.

Good thing is impact variations are usually minimal and will not be noticed from field shooting positions and what the wind will do if distances are stretched. Spending time working on stable shooting platforms in the field can greatly improve odds of 1st shot hits.

In my experience and observations, first shot windage issues are caused by the human shouldering the rifle differently than following shots. Especially if it's repeatable from one shooting session to the next one.

All the well built rifles I've shot shoot to point of aim with first shot from a clean barrel at shorter ranges. At longer ranges, the first shot (or two) from a clean barrel will go a third MOA low because it's velocity is a tiny bit slower.

25-06 SOUNDS LIKE YOUR GUN READY TO HUNT LOGANDON RIFLE SEEMS TO HAVE THE PROBLEM !!!!!

This is a zombie thread, but the OP never stated whether this was a clean bore phenomena or just a cold bore phenomena. If it was a clean bore issue, the fouler makes sense. If it was a cold bore, it may be that the shooter needed a warmup shot. Not good for a hunting situation, but only 3/4" off would be tolerable.
