Why Doc doesn't use the term annealed with cartridge cases

I've had a number of people ask Me over the years ,why I insist brass cartridge cases aren't annealed ,when making the neck and shoulder malleable . IF everyone would refer to the article I've posted and read about TIME and TEMPERATURE to actually achieve truly annealed brass , I sincerely would hope you all understand why I use the term malleable .

What ever term you would like to use is fine with me. I really don't care.

I do have an opinion on your choice of reference material. The article is based on the thinning of cartridge brass from 15 to 70%, referred to as "cold worked" or "cold reductions". This process is done when the cartridge brass is formed in production, some times long before we (as reloaders) acquire it.

The study you referred to then "anneals" , their term, not mine, the cartridge brass to bring it back to a malleable state, and then lists the different times, temperatures and effects.

I can't speak for others, but I am not in the habit of reducing the thickness of my cartridge brass by 15 to 70%, so I am skeptical of the value of this study for my purposes.

But at least there wasn't any political agenda involved, and that's rare lately. And refreshing.

. . . welllll, maybe not "exactly". :p
This is a lot like the term “Headspace”.

If you are at the range or at a Match, and someone asks you how much headspace your rounds have after sizing, and you say, “bout a couple of thousandths”, anybody listening knows what is being referred too.

Of course, there is always the guy who will say, “well, you do know that headspace is a theoretical distants between a perpendicular datum line of the case shoulder and the bolt face”.

Yeh, well, he just wants to know how many thousandths I end up with between the case head and the bolt face when I chamber a round.

We all know that the correct term is “head clearance” and really don’t give a darn about being “correct”.

An annealed case (as you define it) is malleable. To render a case annealed you anneal (v.) it. To render a case merely malleable, what verb describes what you do to it, if it's not "anneal"?
