Why do I see all the 30 cal boys going with the heavies?

Over 50 years shooting X course NMC comp I shot 30/06, .308 Win as required by Palma and 300 Win Mag for 1000 yards and if I could go back and do it all over again my cartridge would be the 6MM Dasher! I shoot 1000 here regular like at home and under all conditions the Dasher is the most accurate cartridge I've ever fired....bar none!!

This question is completely out of curiosity, and no more. For more than 35 years, I have seen competitors using bullets from 155 grains to 175 grains when shooting competitively. I noticed the vast majority of people now are using (at least most advertisements and group orders are showing) bullets from 180 to 240 grains. Why the shift to the the heavier bullets? Now mind you,, I don’t shoot high power anymore, or anything using 30 caliber in competition. Just wondering! Thanks.
My grandpa used to tell me” throw a feather and when it leaves your hand it stops, throw a rock the same size and because it’s heavier it will go further”. He used that saying to describing why the 200gr + bullets were better than the light ones. I was younger and this was the 80s and I couldn’t wrap my head around how bigger slower bullets shot further. The same caliber you are asking about now. Thanks for bringing back good old memories!!
