Why did I not try this sooner...

I tried a few different powders on my new 25.06 searching for the, "one". Then I saw 4064 on the shelf... And the rest is history! Less than 1/2" for 3 shots. I now have 8 lbs. of the stuff.

In the 60's,
the go to powders were 4064 and 4895 for just about any cases like 30/06/270/25-06 and down thru to the 222 sized cases, using with the proper sized bullet weights.

Used to buy it in 50# drums of both. ;)

Back when I had rifles chambered for .308, my load was Rem brass F/L sized, CCI BR-2, 42.2gr of IMR-4064, and the 175SMK at 2.810" OAL.

IMR-4064 is also what I use for the .30-'06, 150gr HDY FMJBT over 50.0gr of IMR-4064 for the Garand and it works well in my 22"-24" hunting rifles, also 48.1gr of IMR-4064 with the 168SMK or 165SGK.

I don't believe in hot loading, especially for the .30-'06; there's no real advantage. If I want to stretch the case's performance. I have two rifles chambered in .280 Rem.

I've only played with IMR 4064 but it did produce good results. For me Varget produced tighter groups so I went with it. The only potential downside to 4064 is the grains are a little longer than say 4895, Varget or RL 15 and may not meter as well. Otherwise, its as good of a powder for a 308 as there is, IMO.

I have shot AA 2495BR in my 308's since I had the first one built in '95. 43gr with 168's and 210M with 2.80 OAL has shot well in a Weisman/McMillan barrel, a Win HV, 2 Rem 700P's, an Oby barrel and my current Rock barreled rig. This lot from a case of 8's I bought in '95 so don't know if current lots are much different? Seems to be about the same as IMR4895 and burns clean. Have had better accuracy with it then Varget and RL15. Need to try it with 175's but keep finding more 168's so trying to get rid of them. lol Really I need to get out and shoot more!!!!

My "Powder Metering" problems went away when I bought my Chargemaster. Added the "tweaks" and I can live with the one or two mis-dropped charges every hundred or so rounds.

Anything from "finely ground pepper" type powder to the "rat-crap" shaped granules, the chargemaster just does the job.
