Why are so many used 6PPC's for sale?

Gentlemen,

Please pardon my questions if they sound like newbie questions, but I am a newbie to both this forum and to the PPC caliber. (FYI: I use a previously owned, lightweight bench 6PPC for varmint control on my property.)

It appears, at least to me, that there is a movement underway "away" from the 6PPC caliber since the majority of bench rifles for sale are in 6PPC caliber. That is my newbie observation.

My questions are: Why are there so many 6PPC bench rifles for sale as compared to other calibers? Are they for sale because they are shot out, or because people are moving away from that caliber and to another?

Or have I perhaps made an incorrect observation?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Probably there are more for sale because there are so many of them shooting the 6PPC in the first place. A barrel is an expendable commodity so even though one may get to a point where the accuracy has begun to diminish, you simply rebarrel it. No need to sell the whole gun. Many shooters have several guns going at a time and many just enjoy building them.

Over time, the definition of what is the latest and hottest has changed. Shooters who moved to a opposite port and bolt action, may switch to one with an ejector an mini-port on the same side as the bolt, or a drop port. If you look at the old pictures of rifles, you will see that there have been some changes in stocks. Rifles that made weight with a 36X scope may be too heavy to easily use a more current, heavier scope. Sometimes it is easier to sell the old rifle and start from scratch, than modify it.

In addition to the above, there has been a significant shift in the number of shooters in score shooting instead of group shooting, especially in certain regions. Since the 30BR has become the "king of the hill" in score shooting many shooters have switched from 6PPC to 30BR.

Like was stated above....10 years ago 99% of the guns on the line were probably 6PPC.....for group or score. That means the odds that one for sale would be a PPC is 99%. Also, as stated above...the "latest and greatest" might be the newest stocks, actions, or just simply what won xyz shoot last month/year....people want to upgrade or change to what is hot. Maybe some are getting out of the sport.

I think used customs are a great way to get into the sports. The price has already been depreciated out ...you probably will get very close to what you paid for a used custom if you decide to upgrade/change or quit. As far as BBLs....they are a throw away item...I don't care what the seller says.....I always plan on a new tube...just in case. Since I have an action wrench I can then switch back and forth and pick one.

I'm not sure your observation is all that correct, however, based on my own experience with the 6PPC, I would suggest that those who have moved on may have found the competition very keen, more than they may have been used to, and trying to keep the cartridge in tune with the elements, can be extremely challenging at times.

Personally, I'm going to be concentrating more on competing this year in both Score and Group using my 30BR simply because it's much easier to tune and keep in tune, and barrel life is much longer. And, when I used the 30BR last year, I was able to turn in some very competitive HV groups with it. At this point in time, I'm seriously considering turning my 6PPC into a LV 30BR. I haven't decided for sure, but it's crossed my mind more than once.
