Why are so many high end scopes up for resale

I am trying to decide on what to buy for my next benchrest scope. I have been watching the scope sales in the for sale section here. what I have found is that a lot of the high power scopes, such as the Golden Eagle and Sightron scopes are offered for sale.

I usually do not sell items that I find to be of good quality and useful to me. If these scopes are of good quality and are as good as advertised by the sellers, why are they selling them?

I don't know what the upgrade to a Golden Eagle. that is if it is as good as the advertising. Maybe a March 80 power. What are you using now Dusty?

Start of the season, people have new scopes.

I sold an NXS because I got a new scope and ended up with more target scopes than I have target rifles. (wish that was true in the rest of my safe)

Owner satisfaction with high-end scopes used at high mags is often a personal thing. You might find the sight picture through a Vortex GE superior or inferior to your neighbour's NF Competition at the same magnification say ..... and he could well find the opposite. So if at all possible, try before you buy.

There has to be a lot of 'fashion' in this too. Every year or at most two throws up the new must-have model. Good news for the perennially indigent (including me) who buy 2 or 3 year old secondhand examples or the no longer favoured models.

Works for me, I have no problems shooting a quality second hand scope for 1/3 to half the cost of a new model.

I think it’s great. I recently purchased from the classified section a Kahles 1050, NF BR and a Kowa 82, all for good prices.

You need a bench rest scope, they are for sale, what’s the problem?

I agree, I mean, what's the down side??? I got a good friend that has too much money, always thinks he needs something different and is not long getting it. Typically, as posted, he is never satisfied. I have bought guns from him on the first trip to the range over the slightest non-issue that upsets him, and it's always for like half price.
When he says, "so....what do you think about those new.......{insert anything} ???"
I soon produce this "appendage" that I can hang a wet towel on.

Buying high & selling low... I'm the best at it. I like to support the companies that treat me right, and liquidate things from those that don't. Plus, trying new things and horse trading is part of the fun. Perhaps most importantly, once new acquisitions reach a certain monetary threshold, I normally sell some perfectly functional stuff to keep the peace with the War Dep't. I've regretted it on a few occasions, but what the heck?

I only buy two types of scopes these days. Weaver fixed 36s and Sightron 111 10-50s. Used prices are great for my wallet!
I did buy a Golden Eagle. It’s a nice scope but I have a little trouble with the eye relief. It’s harder to keep my head at the perfect distance than the Sightrons.

More heavy scopes may be for sale. Competition needs are quickly changing. Being able to see exactly where a spotter is, which way it is tilting, how close to the line it is for a possible challenge, and where the shiny pasters are to determine shot grouping, are all eliminated with electronic targets.

The true high end scopes available in the market, by this I mean the top tier, are overkill for simply demarcating 1/2 line increments across the target face. Yes, we look at mirage as well, but mirage is by definition lacking of the detail that you would only be able to discern with the most expensive glass.

I am not opposed to used scopes. As you said, the good brands are guaranteed for life. I have a Leupold 45 and a T36X I bought used here and both are great. But I knew the seller. While I am not a competitive shooter, I do shoot against myself.

Of course, like everyone else, I always think that a new piece of equipment will make me a better shooter.;).

Problem is that it is hard to buy a pig in a poke. Where I shoot, which is a public range, where there are a lot of AR type shooters, there is little in the way of high end equipment. to test. Everyone is always talking about the Benchrest crowd being so willing to help out the new guys, but here in the Baltimore area, I can't find anyone to ask. I did go to one match last year near here but I realize you don't question anyone about their equipment while they are shooting and then everyone suddenly disappears.

There is another match nearby in June that I will go to and see what I can accomplish there but not in competition. Just to watch and maybe learn something.

What Dusty said sort of. I had a change of application so I sold a perfectly fine SFP NF MOA ATACR and bought an FFP mil Model, same 5-25x56 34mm tube.

I’m in northern Delaware, just a couple hours north of you. You could come up for a “look see” if you want. I have a NF 12-42 Bench, 8-32 NSX, Sightron 10-50s, Weaver t36s, a Golden Eagle and some others.
