I started wondering 30 years ago why the .223 is called the 5.56mm nato and the .308 is the 7.62 nato, when the actual conversion numbers are different. One inch equals exactly 25.40000 millimeters, so .224 = 5.689 mm, .243 = 6.172, .257 = 6.528, .264 = 6.706, .277 = 7.039, .284 = 7.214, .308 = 7.823.
Another way to look at it: 6mm = .236, 6.5 = .256, 7 = .276, 8 = .315.
Is it just some tradition we are stuck with, like pipe size? ie, 1/2" pipe = .840 od. 3/4" pipe = 1.050, etc.
