Why all even numbers?

Can anyone explain why rifle barrels all seem to come in "even numbered" lengths. I realize that some "customs" are odd lengths, even with fractions of an inch as well but why do factories seem to cut their barrels on the even mark.

I shoot mostly .30 cal and 24" seems to be common with some 26" then a jump to 30".

Just curious why this is or if I've been overlooking the "odd ones". ;)

Remington 40X Rangemasters once had 27¼" barrels. That's pretty odd.

It appears that Remington is not over it's "odd". The twist on a 5-R Milspec barrel is 1:11.25" (some say 11.28")

Why isn't a 220swift called a 224swift? And why is there a 223?
Maybe they actually aren't even, but called so.

Just measure a Rem BBL from reciever face I DOUBT you'll ever find a TRUE 24", 26" BBL length. I've had 24" bbls(marketed length) that were as short as 23.25 and as long as 24. 7/8 and a Rem Sendero in 7 STW that was 25. 1/8". It is what it is .

Barrel lengths are measured from the bolt face.
I'm aware of that.
So what barrels measure from the reciever face doesn't really mean anything, right?

They still mean something. The USMC measures barrels on the M40a5 from the recoil lug or something like that. You can measure them how ever you want to. If you tell your smith you want 26.5inches of rifling your barrel will be much longer than 26.5inches. The batfe measures from the bolt face.

If you add the tenon length you "should" arrive at (true)BBL length right........By adding .700 (tenon length)

CJ6,
If we split meaningless hairs, let us not forget that Remington 700s have a counterbore into which the bolt nose extends, so if the legal definition of barrel length is from the bolt face, adding the tenon length to the length in front of the recoil lug would be fractionally longer than the legally defined length of that particular barrel.

The point I guess is that I've RARELY seen Remingtons BBLs the SAME length and varying by some 3/4" less or 7/8" more (that's a good spread).... and no I'm not trying to split any hairs, just observations on some of the factory Rems I've had.
