why a tight neck gun? help!

can somebody explain why you need a tight neck chamber versus a no turn neck. I understand precision but dont the necks crack prematurely etc?

If anything, the necks last longer. Remember, with standard chambers,brass ,and dies, the neck is over sized, and an expander ball is dragged through it to bring it up to the desired inside diameter, and loaded round total neck clearance is 2-3 times greater than a properly set up tight neck chamber. All of this together means that the standard setup works brass a lot more than a tight neck chamber that has something on the order of .002 total clearance, and sizing that does not involve the use of an expander ball.

thank you for the advice,now who is the best guy to send a rifle to get it really trued (rem 700)and get it right the first time,i want a varmint/benchgun that will repeat as my stock barrel is getting on and it is time to rebarrel and make it right.I have a h-s precision stock and a tuned trigger already.who do you suggest?

By the time that you pay to have your action fully straightened and tightened (fully blueprinted including sleeving the bolt) you will be better off selling your action, and buying a Remington clone like Stiller sells. Your stock and trigger will work.

The only thing in your question that was not responded to was the "no turn neck".

When you turn necks you are basically matching the finished round neck diameter to the chamber neck diameter, with the usual reduction of .001-.002" clearance. A no turn neck can be ordered from your smith who cuts the neck diameter to match your ammo which won't need its neck turned down. In other words, if your .308 ammo, loaded with your favorite (unturned) Lapua brass has a finished neck diameter of .322", you can just have your gunsmith chamber your new barrel with a neck diameter of .324". This will essentially give you a tight neck gun without having to turn the necks. It is my understanding that many competitive shooters have found this to work quite well.

With known quantity brass, that has a minimum neck runout, you can compete successfully in some types of competition, but not in short range Benchrest. In 1,2, and 300yd Benchrest the tight necked 6PPC is almost universally used, and I am not aware of any successful (or unsuccessful for that matter) who does not turn necks.

BTW even if you have the same clearance in a chamber that allows the use of unturned brass, I do not believe that it is correct to call it "tight necked". This term is normally reserved for chambers that will not accept unturned necks. I use the term "close neck" what you really would have is simply a custom spec'ed chamber that met whatever requirement you were trying to satisfy. If one does this, it is a good idea to coordinate the size of brass and FL die with the chamber design.

In 600 yd benchrest No Turn necks are becoming the norm with 6BR and 6BR IMP's. most run 0.272" for a 0.2685" to 0.269" loaded round. I have run 0.271 and 0.272 necks and do nothing to the necks.

There are some who do NOT believe in using tight necks.
I use a minimum of 0.004" and have used up to 0.012" of neck clearance.

I don't know if I should have asked this on a separate thread, but since it may be related to neck-turning, here it is: How does annealing fit in with necks that are turned or not nect turned. I have never turned necks, but if I ever do, does annealing add in any accuracy here? Should I anneal my fire-formed brass before reloading? Does annealing add longevity? In other words, is it worth my while to buy the annealing gear for non-bench rest type varmint shooting, regardless of whether or not I clean up the necks with a neck-turner?
