why 284 than 280 or 280ai?

My .284 is getting around the same velocity as Froggy but with IMR 7828 SSC. 58.4 from a 29" nitrided Brux with Berger 180 Hybrids at 3.275 OAL.

I was going to build a 280 Rem but my smith found a 284 Win reamer in his stash and I like to be different, this was before everyone was using the straight 284 Win and this is a hunting rifle built on a long action I had. I am very pleased with it's accuracy! could I get the same with a 280 Rem? couldn't tell ya but I wanted to shoot the 162 A-Max in either one and the 284 Win allows me to mag feed them with little work on the feed rails I have no problems with feeding. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but with the 162 A-Max and Hybrid100V I'm getting 3011fps over my CED chrony from a 26" tube with good accuracy, if I go higher in the fps the accuracy goes to pot! I never found a good accuracy loading with RL-17, oh my COL with 162 A-Max is 3.100" My hunting buddy's 7 Mag with 150's is running in the low 2900fps. Later,

Kirk, according to QuickLOAD you need to run 75,000 psi. to be able to get that speed from a 162 AMax from a 26" barrel and Hybrid 100V in a 284 Winchester. Just figured I would let you know.

Yep I was told that before, all I know is I'm not a speed freak but I like accuracy and that's what I go for it just so happens these are accurate and faster than they should be. I'm on the 5 loading with this brass, no loose pockets, no seperation rings or signs, no hard bolt handle lift nothing dude. I don't know what's going on or why it works but the planets must have lined up right.

I agree with 280Ackleyrized, my 2 280 AI's on 700 trued actions with Hart 1x9 bbl will shoot .300-.400 all day long with Sierra 140sbt or Nosler 140bt. at 3140fps with no pressure signs using 4350 and 4831

The 160's shoot under .450 and do it at over 2950 in 26" bbl

go the 280 AI and you can also down load it when after lighter game.

As stated earlier, I'm a hunter. I just took offense to the notion that the 280AI isnt an accuracy round. Granted my rifle is set up for accuracy. One of the best in the business built it. ND on this one runs .311( done this way cause the ID of a 280AI redding die is .311. Perfect pillar/skim bedding. Solid sturdy laminated wood stock. One hell of a pet load running 140NAB over a charge of VV N 165. She flat shoots-3206 MV. But I aint into punchin paper unless its to verify zero. Maybe one day my finances will allow me to dabble in target shooting.
