6.5-284 vs. 6BR in the Wind

How does the 6BR compare to the 6.5 x 284 in bucking the wind? I get mixed answers on this question when I ask the shooters at Williamsport. I'm refering to 1000 yard matches.

Try to compute both trajectory on JBM web site and cut and paste in spead sheet to compare. JBM is very accurate and you can trust in the results. 6.5/284 is nice but 6.5/284 at 2900 is not 6.5/284 load hot at 3100 fps barrel life is not the same too ...

The 6.5x284 will beat the 6br hands down on a windy day at 1000 yards. My wife has a 6br and I shoot a 6.5x284 or 6.5x350 mag. On windy days,6 min with the 6.5) the 6.5 is usually need about 2-2.5 min windage less than the 6br. The 6.5 is pushing 142gr MK at 2950fps and the 6br is driving 107gr at 2850fps.

I have been shooting a 6BR Improved this year in Ligh Gun. 100 gr Clinch River,BC is .525) with 33.6 gr VARGET at 3130 fps.

In light wind conditions it is tough. I have consistently shot around 6" all year. It has been as low as 4.8" and as high as 9". Shot a 10 shot 99 with 6.06" at Williamsport in the Open.

This last weekend at the IBS 1k Nationals in Ohio, I shot a 6.1" and then got in a windy relay. Shot a 12" with 2" vertical and 12" horizontal. Was the horizontal me or bag handling. Not sure but lot of others had problems also. Ohio has a lot of wind coming crossways the range down 3 steep valleys and one large cut. Drives everyone crazy.

Bottom line after one year shooting the 6BR Imp, I think it does give something up in the wind to higher BC bullets such as 6.5 JLK 140 gr with BC of .630.

Another option is the 6.5/08 with long-seated bullet and 142 match bullet. This gives 0.58 BC minimum at 2850 fps in a 28 inch barrel. But with the 6BR accuracy potential remains high to very high and with light recoil / less powder load it's easy to machine gun, shoot fast strings) in the wind.
