who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br, updtd 7-22-10

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

I wish you luck with this.

The Arisaka is hell-for-stout, so you should have as much rigidity as you'll likely find in a military action. You may need a sled to sit on the magazine follower, to feed single shot.

Is the Richard's price one of their Bargain dealies?

Richard's plays to mixed reviews, but if you're willing to wait, their stocks can, with some effort, be serviceable.

In general, one of their strengths is great wood, but you'll be forced to use laminate if you want the 3" fore end.

As I said, Good Luck, and we'll look forward to photographs and your results.

i didnt mean you any disrespect sir. You mentioned something about not playing with it for very long and putting it away, or selling it for your next project. Or something like that. I would have to re-read your post. I would think that you may have a hard time getting even 900 bucks out of a rifle with that action in it. I may be way wrong about that, as i am not familiar at all with that action. I do respect your wanting to hang with a good friend and doing the project together. Good women and good friends, Now thats living, especially when you through a rifle into the mix! good luck friend!! Lee

I have one of these Arisaka actions (found in an abandoned house) and was considering a 308 win. build with a free take off, but didn't have the guts. I applaud your enthusiasm. Interested to see how it goes in a bench rest cal. Looking forward to the stock issues being worked out as well.

Godd evening Gents,

Here is where we are at as of now. Last sunday I went and hung out with my pal with all the know how. He showed me how to Lap the lugs on the action. We used Diamond paste and it worked great. We got about 90-95 percent contact on the bottom lug and 85-90 percent on the top lug. He said he normally uses valve grinding compound but was out. The diamond paste worked well it was just a little loose and didnt stay on the lugs like the VC compound does. Tomorrow i will be pick up a Weaver number 70 scope base so we can drill holes and cut threads to screw the base on.

I recieved my reamer from PTG and what a speciman. That SOB is sharp. I hope to be threading and chambering in the next two weeks.

Keep your good eye peeled for more updates.

Ironically, I happen to have an Arisaka actioned 1950's 220 Swift with a (likely) douglas barrel. It has a full one inch tube and the action is highly modified. It is in a huge heavy walnut stock. My friend bought it 20 years ago for $200 with a Lyman All American 20X. I bought it from him eight years ago for $400, after using it for three years shooting woodchucks. It has a waaay long throat (likely rifling is gone) and stretches cases. It won't shoot for beans till it has 6-8 rounds thru a clean tube, then it holds UNDER 1/2 inch for about 15-18 rounds, and then it is back to cleaning again. Why do I shoot it? Because it is a blast! My friend who has a Hart built 243 AI in Masterclass stock politely let me shoot next to him without laughing very loudly (he wanted to), until my Weaver T10 Arisaka dumped chucks to a bit over 500 yards. The first shot was a one shot kill at 465 yards off a McFadden Tripod. He doesnt laugh now. I am no techno-geek, so I have no photo upload ability, but the gun still groups 55 gr NBT with 40 grains of H380 at under 1/2 inch. I plan to go to a 6mm AI on it when it finally dies...despite the laughs. It can be done!! The question remains...Why? Because is good enough reason.

You have to post some pics. I want to see what this thing looks like. Sounds cool as hell.
I believe if you load pics onto photobucket and then post the IMG code here it will put the pics up.

Hey SEND IT,

Any update? I have several photos of my arisaka, tried to upload to photobucket, got frustrated. Am willing to email them, since I KNOW I can do that, if you or anyone is then interested in putting them up...I just got ticked when it took forever and did not seem to "take". Just send me an email or PM and I can email the photos to you.

I just finished "fireforming" my cases for this year. The chamber is a bit on the large side and i find that I need to fire the cases once, tehn they shoot better. One of the wierdnesses about my old gun.

Well things with this project have been slow since I just got anothe rproject back and Have been working on load development. The other project is a remington 700 that William Roscoe built at Louisianna Precision Rifles and I couldnt be happier with the way it turned out. Roscoe is one hell of a great guy and gunsmith. Here is a picture of it.

The 30 BR project has been chamber and we cut the groove for the extractor. We still need to cut it to 24" length and crown the barrel. Once that is done the only smithing left will be to drill and tap the scope base mounts. Anyone know where I can get that drill bit and tap set for the scope base screws?

As far as other details I got KG gunkote in flat black and I will paint the entire barreled action and bolt. I also order the stock from Richards microfit and its specs are as follows: Marksman style, 3" forearm, 1.25 barrel channel, 2 studs, 1" butt pad, in brown/brown laminate. I will prolly stain it a really dark cherry wood mahogony.

The stock is two months out and while I wait I will be buying a timney trigger and deciding on bullets. I will try to post a picture this weekend of the progress.
Thanks to all for following and contributing to my thread

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br, updtd 4-21-10

I was at Hart Rifle Barrels in Apulia NY a few days ago and looked long and hard at a photo from 1951 of a bunch of early benchresters at a match. There were alot of guns there that look alot like mine. Sent photos to a couple guys, hope they make it here on the post. Keep at it..even if the technology is OLD! "Because" is reason enough! No one should stand in the way of a man who has the means, to own anything he wants, as long as he does not keep another from the same right. That is liberty. Looking forward to seeing what it does for you,

Scott,
I sent some photos to you and to Kenny474. Thoughts? To encourage you, yesterday my Arisaka Swift accounted for a black feathered varmint at 530 yards and I hit a cantelope size rock at a tad over 700. How about an update? Since I can't post those photos, maybe you or Kenny can do me the favor and toss them up?

How is the progress? Want to see photos. Hope to rebarrel mine to a 6mm soon, using a Hart barrel. Just got an unlucky woodchuck at 725 yards and one at about 700 with the Swift/Arisaka. Looking forward to your results.

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br, updtd 4-21-10

Snert, somehow I have lost the pics in my E-mail. No idea how it happened. I had looked at them and was going to send them to photobucket, and when I checked back to my e-mail a few days later I couldn't find it. Must have got deleted by accident or something. I had saved them to my PC, but it's in the shop getting a couple new video cards, so when it returns I will get them posted. Sorry about the wait, actually forgot about it until I saw the new post.
