Its a Japanese Arisaka 7.7 military action made in the Tokyo Koygo Arsenal prolly 1943-44 and the plans are to build cheap gun that I may decide to compete with later. In this thread I will document the idea and carry you through the entire build all the way til I get bored and put this girl in the safe and start something else.

The plan is to true the action, then chamber in 30br and thread the barrel you see below. Its a kreiger 18 twist in a light varmit contour and it will be finished at 24".

The rifle will be then bedded into a stock I get at Richards microfit. I will also put in a timney trigger.

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot.

I had to just stop and reply there was something wrong with the screen.

I ordered my reamer from PT&G and it is going to be 0 freebore and a .330 neck size. I bought Lapua 6mm brass and will be doing all my sizing and seating with LE wilson dies. I also picked up some CCI br4 primers and H4198 powder.

Well heres the part where the really smart guys chime in and give up itty bitty pieces of great info and the nerds will throw up from theirs about how it will never shoot. I welcome all comments.

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

I have had 1 stock from Richards Micr0---the action fit was good, be prepared to do a whole bunch of sanding,I mean lotssssss.

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

Richards Micro-Fit has a "big" selection of stocks to choose from but from what I've seen and experienced first hand, Richards Micro-Fit is color blind and they don't know how to keep their chain saw sharp. Or should I say ax?
Be prepared to do "lots" of work to get their stock to fit! As far as finish, you'll probably spend more $$ on sandparer then you'll spend for the stock.
But then again, you might just luck out and get a good one? Buy Lotto tickets?? You a gambler? ;)

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

I heard through the grapevine that they have finally replaced the chain on that old saw they do the inletting with..
Get a stock from that Russo guy in Pa. You'll save a ton of money by not buying hardly any sandpaper at all, they usually don't even need to be bedded they are so close..

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

You'd be better off with a HV barrel, I think.

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

It can't be done!....how about a little respect for the hundreds or maybe thousands that have tried! ;) ;)

Send it -- you successfully posted images hosted on Tinypic.com... which is a good thing. But you should down-size the images first. Your pix are a full megabyte each. I've resized and re-posted the photos for you.

It's a good idea to reduce the file size to 150kb or less before posting.

Thanks, The guys over at the hide said the same thing but no one could tell me how to do it. Thanks again.

As explained in the Forum instructions, download www.irfanview.com (Free). Use this to crop photos to 640 pixels wide and "save as" jpeg @ 90% quality. That should bring pix in under 150kb each.

You can also resize photos with other programs such as MSPaint. But Irfanview has a very easy interface

Send-it,

Don't worry too much about the stock. If you are willing to spend the time and sand it then clear. It will turn out just fine. Mine was alot of work but it turned out nice and I saved lots of money.

I can't wait to see the finished product. Those old Japanese actions were very strong but I've never seen one acurized. I'll be following this project closely.

As for the Richards stock, I've done a lot of them over the years and never had a problem with them. They do take a bit of work but nothing hard. I think they are a great value.

That is what I was thinking.

Ya, Why such a cheap action? Whats wrong with a good old rem 700. You talked like that eventually your going to get tired of it and if it were a rem 700 you could sell it to fund your next adventure. Just seems a bit silly to me. But whatever floats your boat! Good Luck!! Lee

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

If you are doing all the work yourself-go for it.

It's far better idea than a Mossberg 810 action that someone I knew used for a similar rifle using a old Rem 40x stock .And he did none of the work!

To the others commenting -Why would you use a cheap barrel
for a project ?

I would enjoy seeing more photo's etc .

The main reason is that I have a freind who has built a bunch of these guns and he knows how to do all the smithing. I paid $125.00 for the action, and $138.00 for the reamer. A remington action would have cost a minimum of 300 bucks plus the reamer. This project was meant to be a budget build here are the totals far.
Action $125.00, Reamer $138.00, Barrel $295.00, Timney $67.00 Richards stock $155.00 Wilson Dies $135.00 total $915.00. So if it shoots .25 moa and I get to say I built it with the help of a freind its worth it to me.

Re: who wants to bet I cant get this old thing to shoot. 30br

And dot be fool by the action. The old Arisaka's are solid actions I happen to get really lucky my receiver is in excellent condition and the bolt i got from numrich looks practical brand new and and the bolt face doesnt have a mark on it, like its never been fired.
