Let me start off by saying, I don't know anything about machining or chambering barrels, so if my terms are off...bear with me.
I've got a 1.750" barrel blank that needs to be installed on my barrel-blocked heavy gun. It is my understanding that chambering a barrel in/through the headstock is superior to doing it using a steadyrest. I've spoken to a couple of local gunsmith's and it seems they all can only do up to 1.350" barrels this way.
Do anybody know if any of the prominent benchrest gunsmith's have lathe's large enough to do a barrel of this size in the headstock? Or, are most all of the larger barrels done using a steadyrest?
The current barrel must have been done in a steady rest and it shoot's fine, I'm just looking at other options right now.
Thank you.
