Whidden Die Problem

I have a set of Whidden Bushing Dies in 6x47 Lapua. I am neck sizing 6.5x47 Lapua down to 6x47 Lapua. When sizing with a Redding Bushing I am only able to size half of the neck. I have checked numerous times and the bushing is seated as far down as it will go. Can someone advise me on what I am doing wrong? Tony

Don't know about John Whidden's product specifically, but the Redding & Wilosn bushing dies I have aren't designed to size the full neck. They leave some perhaps to align the case better in the chamber.

Yes bushing dies arent designed to do what your trying to do. You want a regular 6x47L FL die to do this. The whidden dies I have in 6 dasher and 284 shehane size about 2/3rds of the neck. This Im happy with and they help to load good ammo.

Get Whidden to make you a non bushing full length die this will size the rest of the neck. I had to do this also with my 7saum making brass from 300saum and neck turning after. Works very well

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the things I have been reading here on bushing. I was under the impression that a neck sizing bushing was suppose to reduce the size of the neck from its fired size back to a chambered size or be able to reduce the neck down to different calibers: examples off the top of my head would be the 223 to 20 Practical.

Wouldn't you want your FL die or bushing to size the complete neck to whatever tension on the neck you are using?

I will give Whidden a call on Monday.

No, any time I use a bushing die, I see a tide mark part way down the neck. If I use a smaller bushing the tide falls. If I use a larger bushing the tide rises.

I read this article a couple of times. The article states a portion of the neck is not sized when using a bushing. I guess I need a better definition of a "portion". I'll give Whidden a call Monday to follow-up as I do like their dies. May need to have a FL die. Thanks everyone.

Whidden called as soon as they received the die. They found an error in the die so replaced the complete die. I also bought a FL size die without bushing. Excellent customer service.

CLP, Does this mean one would need a FL die to completely form the necks the 1st time, then they could go to the FL with bushing for sizing after the cases were fire formed?

My understanding, after talking with Dave at Whidden is the bushing die would leave a donut at the neck shoulder junction. He used the FL die in one pass to neck to 6mm and did not leave a donut. Based on that I decided to buy the FL die also. I am waiting on my weapon to be finished. So right now I am learning how to use the dies and the bushing.

Keep in mind I have a lot to learn so my knowledge is very limited.

One of the strategies of the bushing is to size only part of the neck so you don’t encounter the donut. You can size the whole neck using either a FL sizing die or a Lee Collet die for that matter. The latter is a better option as you will not need a sizing ball to open up the inside of the neck and to move that donut out as the LCD does that in one step.
