Which twist

I am caught between selecting a 10T or 12T and barrel length for my 20 Practical project. I will be using 32gr and 40gr bullets. I am looking to squeeze the best performance and accuracy from a Savage 10 out to 500 yards. I would love to read as many opinions as possible especially how well your 20 Practical did on your P-dog hunts before making my decision.

I have a krieger 11 twist on a 20 Tac and its great shooting 40 and 39g bullets. Also shoots berger 35 and hornady 32 equally well. It is pretty rare in my experience to hear about a 12 twist that couldnt shoot 40's. Building a 20ppc right now with a 10 twist for 40 grainers.

you might think about a 9" twist. I had one in a 204 ruger and it shot 50 gr burgers real well. shot 32 and 39 gr sierras well also. on those 4-500 yard shots the heavyer bullet will drift less in the wind.
just my thoughts...treeman

It is very common for a 1-12tw not to shoot a 40gr Vmax and shine with a 39gr BK. They won't necessarily turn them sideways but the internet sites are clobbered up with guys that can't get that 12tw to work with the 40's, get a 10 or 11 and go forward.

I would go 10 or 11 twist. I have a select match Shilen on my LRPV and it is close to perfect. I think I read that Berger is discontinuing the 50's and 55's.

Not an expert on the .20 practical so I went with the recommendations of a good smith, 1-10. I plan on shooting the 39s or 40s exclusively. If I want to go heavier, the 6br comes out.

Well it seems the 10T wins the debate. I too am looking at the Shilen select match, but what length barrel should I ask for 24" or 26", or does it even matter?

I actually went 22". I don't think you will gain much over 24" other than weight and noise reduction.

That 844 pulldown is NOT 322, but H335, burns kind of dirty, but shoots good in lots of guns.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Too many powders rollin' around in the old noggin. :)

I would go as long as I could, easy to shorten it and if you want to rechamber later you can extend the life of the barrel.

I had Jim Bordon build my rifle with a 10 twist. 39 gr blitz kings work great. 40 gr V-maxes chopper fail to much in my rifle for some reason.

Chossing from those two I would go 10 twist. I have a shilen 9 twist in 204 ruger and i love it. keyholes 40 grainers from a hundred and 5o grain bergers have same POI. I load a forty in front and a 50 grain behind in my ar for coyotes. I flat devastated a coyote with the 50 grainer at 296 yards last week. I would imagine similar results with 20 praciacal. I honestley get excellent groups even with 26 grain varmit grenades and 32 vmax as well. It kinda makes me wonder if hornady didnt experment with fast twist barrels before releasing the 204? Maybe i am wrong ,But i do not regret my 9 twist shilen. The lite 26 grainers do have about a four inch high poi at 100yards but still group excellent.

Try these sites. Run the calculations and then you will know what twist is the best choice for you. Just be sure to twist for the longest bullet and you should be fine.
