Which small primers do you use?

Hi Guys,
I have been using the CCI 400 with the Palma brass, but I haven't tested any other brand or type. I have been experiencing some (1 out of 5) variations where one bullet is either 20 fps faster or slower than the others, so I'm considering doing a primer comparison, so which small primers have worked well for you?

P.S. I'm shooting F-TR (300, 600 and 1K)

Kindest regards,

Joe

I would test them all you will find a few that will give you low ES and still shoot. With my dasher I found wolf was the best. The federal CCI was last. Larry

If a low Es load don't shoot at 100 it sure won't at longer. If you're 100 yd isn't .125 or less why would you shoot longer?
Larry
I have had loads shoot ES of 2 and 3 and groups in the zero's at 100 and they wouldn't shoot under 13 inches at 1000 and all vertical. I don't even bother shooting at 100 anymore and I don't use a chrono anymore. The paper at 1000 tells you what you need to know. Matt

Because the match is about to start, that's why. I'm not saying there aren't F/TR class shooters who can guarantee 5 shot groups less than 1/8 MOA, but I haven't seen one yet. Maybe the guys I shoot with are complete klutzes, but I won the 600 yd F/TR match and the 600 yd BR match (using my F-Open gun) last month with my .223 and 6mm BR F-Class rifles, both of which shoot better than 1/2 MOA, but neither of which are guaranteed to shoot 5 shot groups better than 1/4 MOA every time, much less better than 1/8 MOA.

In developing a load, is there any difference in primers or a slight change in powder, seating depth, etc. that a tuner can't correct? For me, if you can't get a decent load to shoot with a tuner, it's time to change barrels. The other option is the hard way. Test with (3) different: seating depths, bullets, powders, primers, or neck thicknesses. This would be 243 possible combinations (I think!) to test......oh, plus the wind. My suggestion is to just work with a load developed by an experience shooter like savagedasher and work with a tuner.

In hundreds of 1000 yard BR Matches I have seen very few tuners win. For the percentage of them on the line verses relay wins. Matt

I posted here somewhere (back in Nov.) some numbers I got for CCI450, Fed 205M, and TulAmmo 5.56M in my 6.5x47L... The TulAmmo gave the highest velocity with the tightest groups but SD was the highest... I just stuck with my old standby 205M for the match and will be testing more in the future at farther distances.. I'm intrigued about building my next load farther out.. Just yesterday I had 10 shots (group) with 3.8-4in. of vertical stringing at 505yds. and would like to cut that in half considering the width wasn't no greater than 1in. ... Be sure to purchase some Wolf or TulAmmo 223M primers to test out, since they are actually a "true magnum" hotter small rifle primer...

I appreciate all of you taking the time to answer my question. I will give the CCI 450 and the BR4 a try.

Matt,
What percentage of CF shooters shoot at 1000 yds?

Matt, tuners don't win, the best shooters win. IMO, tuners are just an easier way to tune. Just because I don't see the necessity to tune with components, isn't an attempt to minimize you, your accomplishments or your tuning process.

Some tuner design can mystify results in my experience, from best settings to worse settings. With them the bad settings deplete accuracy enough that make the better settings appear titillatingly better, but in actuality are superficial gains. To me these designs are more in need of adjustment to keep the barrel/load in tune.

The tuner designs I like best are the ones that hardly deplete accuracy on the worse settings, that then offer more consistent accuracy on the best settings, that hardly need adjustment to keep the barrel/load in tune.
And I like a tuner that completely repeats best accuracy every few thousandths of adjustment and multiple times in one revolution, verses the ones that yield levels of accuracy at different points per revolution of adjustment.
