Small primer tool

Joe R

Hi Guys,
I have been loading 308 using the Hornady priming tool with the tray, it has worked well for large primers. However I've switched to the Lapua Palma brass with the small primer and I'm having some issues with it (I have switched the tray and seating stem).

I know there are some "one at the time" prime seaters, but I'm kind of lazy and like the tray type so that can load 100 at the time. I know about the Lee, Lyman and RCBS but I would like to hear from people that are using the small primers. What works for you?

Thanks,

Joe

This is enough info for me, thanks for the review.

I have one of those "one at a time" primer seaters...a Sinclair....because they just plain work better. I load small primers in 308 Palma brass without issue. Ray

Used an RCBS tray type too until even the new parts they sent me for free failed to solve a problem it developed. Went with Sinclair's one-at-a-time device, never looked back. Large or small, pistol or rifle, all work fine.

I'd ordered one of the bench models from Bullets.com after seeing the bulletin article here but when I got word it was back-ordered for 2+ months (website showed it in stock when I ordered) I cancelled.

I use an RCBS universal for large rifle and a Lee Auto prime for my Dasher with small primers. Also another Lee for 45 colt. Barlow

What kind of issues are you having?

I, like you, do not wish to pick up each primer to seat it in a case. I currently use the Hornady priming tool for Lapua Palma brass, and BR4 primers with a Hornady case holder. I don't have any issues except some primers flipping over between the primer carrier and the priming ram (for lack of better terms).

I'm incredibly happy with the Lyman tool. The handle is comfy, it feels substantial in your hand, the primer tray has a lock-out latch/switch.
Possible downsides - still uses traditional shellholders.

I used an old Lee hand primer until the lid just wore off and would pop off when laying it down. I would have bought another Lee, but reports of the new ones are not as favorable as the ones made 10+ years ago (cheap handles, etc).

I have that problem and I have two primers at the time go down on the priming ram.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I appreciate all of you taking the time to respond.

I know that the "one at the time" tools are fail-safe, ...still I try to take short cuts and inevitably pay the price for that.

Kindest regards,

Joe
