Which scope base? Zero, 10, 20 MOA?

Hi all,
Forgive me if you've run into this question before, but what scope base would suit my needs? I tried that Ballistic calculator But I can't figure out how scope mount angle factors in. Did a search also and am lead to think I can get away with zero MOA.
I'll be getting a Savage .308Win and it will be topped with a Bushnell 3200 5-15X40mm. I will be shooting from 100 yards to 600+ yards,Might try out the 1000 yard range if my gun and I are up to it).
I'd like to be able to easily run back and forth without having to worry about maxing out the internal adjustment. Bushnell's 'site says it's adjustments cover 50MOA.

What's the best value in one piece bases? Farrell? Would it be better to have a 0 MOA cant with Burris Zee-ring compensation?

Sir,

If you are only going to 600yds and a 50 SMOA max ajustment a 0 MOA base will work. But like you posted, you my try 600+. I would go with a 20MOA base and you will be GTG.

Its better to have and not need. Than need and not have like me :D

I am using a 1" tube Leupold right now on a 20 MOA base. I can dial out to 900yds but have to Mil hold to a 1000yds.

So its not fun.

One of these days I am going to get a 30 MOA base. Or a flater shooting load ;)

Have a good one.

John

How close in can you dial it? I'm assuming even with 20MOA you still have plenty of headroom for 75 yards,or whatever distance your load peaks at).

What kind of base and rings did you choose?

A .308 at 600 yards is no problem for a flat base. With factory loaded Federal 168's, I only have to come up 15 MOA from my 100 yard zero to be on at 600 yards.

I've got a Badger Ordnance flat base and rings, and a 1" tube Leupold. No problem, and have never taken this particular rifle beyond 700 yards.

The .308 though, does drop like a rock beyond 600 or 700 yards, and if I was serious about shooting this rifle at 1000 I'd want both a scope w/more MOA of adjustment and a 20MOA base.

Regards, Guy

just remember that if you use a 20moa base, that at 100 yards.. with your scope down to the bottom will be approx 13 inches high. which by the way will put you on paper at 600 yards. .308 needs another 22moa of elevation to get on at 1K.

Are you sure about that froggy i mounted a leupold on my rifle with a 20Moa base and could still get it an inch low at 100 centre of scope to centre of barrel is 2 inches Scope is the leupold 36X golden ring 1" tube. And i will add i have only shot to 550yards at this stage but by all calculations i will only need approx 38inches of elevation from 100yard Zero to 1000 yards.
Correct me if i am wrong but my ballistics programe has been right for me so far haveing never shot a 500m it took me 3 shots to be on next 2 were 10`s

Well I am only baseing my thoughts from the Sierra program.. palma gun. When I zero my scope at 100 yards. The bullet strike is 13 inches high with the scope to the bottom.. run the program for a 155 palma at 2950, make your zero at 600 yards and see what it tells you how high the strike is at 100 yards.. 13.2 inches.. that is what my experience has always been .. maybe my rail has more moa than 20.. but I get the same experience with my other rifle too.. which is a 6mm bore.

Well with center of scope set at 2 inches above center of bore and Zeroed at 600 yards gives me 12.7 inches high at 100 and 27.5 inches high at 350 yards which is the top of the path your saying with your scope to the max of its adjustment you cant zero any lower than 600yards if that's the case you definitely have more than 20MOA mounting

I put a Farrell base on a M70 to I guess make it look like a long range rig. More for show and to see what happens. The Farrell base is pretty heavy and adds a lot of unwanted height to the scope. Its off the gun now.

Then I discovered the Burris Signature rings and they offer the offset insert kit for elevation or whatever is needed and those rings hold a scope so well.

Good luck.

Bob,

You are probably reading your ballistic program incorrectly. You are right, with the right powder and Ballistic Coefficent, you can get 2700+ fps with a 168 grain bullet which, at 1000 will drop 38...minutes though, not inches. If you have a scope with a 1 inch tube with 50 moa total...you have 25 up and 25 down from the factory center. Add a 20 moa base and, you have 5 down and 45 up...minus 38 and you have an additional 7 up to use to go up at 1000 or use a slower bullet to adjust up more...it should work well.

I used a Farrel 20 MOA base on my Savage adn I can get point of impact 1" low at 100 and click all the way to 1325 on my 6 BR.

Have just run the figures through my PCB ballistics program again and it tells me from my 100 yards Zero to be on at 1000 yards, this is using a 168gr 308 Sierra HPBT MK at MV of 2700Fps)that i would have to wind my scope up 315 - 1/8th clicks or 37.375 MOA.It also tells me that if i was to fire out over a cliff dead level the projectile would be 436.7 inches low at 1000 yards and be traveling at 1197 Fps and take 1.702 seconds to get there.
I have run other peoples data through this program and it is spot on.
And by those figures you should have enough adjustment to shoot at 1000 yards with a 20MOA mount.
Maybe my mount is more than 20MOA like i said i can bottom the scope out and be able to shoot an inch or so low at 100 yards so that should allow me at least 48MOA up.

Aussie Bob and others, just to throw sand into the lubricant, take a hard look at the features of the Iver Design adjustable base; just do not send me the bill. For a multi-purpose, ahem, one weapon shooter, it or the Horus system are good ways to go- pricey, yes, functional? you bet. Overbore
