Which rear rest?

Got a stock Savage 6.5 x 284 f class rifle and want to get the correct rear rest for it so it tracks good and I only have to buy it once. Measured the thickness of the stock today and it measures 1.625 at the thickest point. I am guessing that I should buy a rest with 2" spacing between the ears but then that leaves 3/8" slop. How tall should I get the ears? Got a 3" beaver tail on the front of stock with matching bag. Any help and suggestions would be a great help!!! Thank You

Maybe someone on here can give you better advice but my best idea is: call Edgewood or Protektor and tell them what you're wanting to do. Both have been quite friendly and helpful to me.

The problem with trying to get a nice fitting bag with that factory F class stock as you are already aware us that the bottom portion is indeed tapered..
This is one of the problems why these stocks can be very hard to get to track properly..

I know you probably don't want to hear this but if you want that stock to track better it will need to be modified at the rear along the bottom so that the thickness does not vary from the butt to the grip.. Otherwise you will have a bag that conforms at it's tightest spot decent enough but once moved will become loose and then induce cant.

I have one factory F class stock here where I did'nt want to alter the width so what I did instead was to fabricat a piece of 3/4" barstock long enough to ride in the bag , drilled it for 2 flush mount wood screws and then milled the side that would mate to the stock flat so as to sit nicely..

What this did for the stock was allow primarily the barstock to ride in the ears of the bag and keep a constant amount of pressure through it's fore and aft movement.

Good luck.

Thank you for all your replies. .....patch 700....that makes complete sense. ....I have access to a bridgeport at work and I will do the 3/4" round bar idea you had. Guessing I will need a bag with 3/4" gap between short ears?
Its nice to be able to come to one place and get all this knowledge and help from you folks!!!
Thanks again
