Which rear bag for f-open?

Just received my f-class rilfe, 6dasher/284 switch barrel. i ordered a farely and put an order in for a seb neo. seb neo came before i got my rifle finished so i most likely will sell the farley and keep the neo though i am gonna shoot with both for the first few sessions.

anyway, i have been researching rear bags and im somewhat confused. 'heavy', 'light', big ears, small ears, leather, other materials, edgewood, protektor etc.

I'm used to shooting with a harris bipod and a rear squeeze bag but have no experience with f open rests/rear bags.

sugguestions? thanks.

There R-E-A-L-L-Y is only 1 "bag maker" in my humble opinion. That is PROTEKTOR... They will take any of their bags and modify them ANY WAY YOU WANT! AND they will fill it with either Heavy or Regular sand at YOUR discretion. Does it get any better than that? My recommendation: Go to their site and look at the "Doctor" rear bag. You can get it with the "slick material" ears, and space them to whatever measurement you require. Some stocks have a flat bottom (toe), wider flat bottom than others, or rounded toe. You can order it so it fits your stock perfectly>>>and you can get it with any slope angle you want or flat>>no incline at all..

But like anything else>>>this is a personal preference.. But you owe it to yourself to at least look at their site and maybe call them. They are VERY helpful!

The reason there are so many choices is that different folks have different likes/dislikes and different budgets. When it comes to things like bags, spending a LOT more will only get you a small increase in performance (if any) but the premium bag will probably last a lifetime. I think most guys at the range would be happy for you to borrow their bag for a moment so that you can see how it fits your rifle and your shooting style. My personal preference would be for a decent moderately priced fabric bag which fits perfectly as opposed to a top-of-the-line leather bag which requires shims to get it to the correct height. But that's just me.

I totally agree. I have had two made to order, one a Doctor bag and one a Bumble Bee, both with silver ears. That's the only way to fly.

PS Have them fill it with heavy sand, you'll be glad you did. It's cheaper and save lots of hassle.

Big choice -yes, but it really comes down to what fits you stock. The rear bag is part of the solution on how well/bad your rifle will track. If your rig does not track well you will be just wasting ammo. Talk to your stock provider/gunsmith and see wait others are shooting at the range, then make an informed purchase.
Good luck, and welcome to the sport

thanks for replies. the rifle is a precision rifle and tool low boy stock. the stock bottom that would fit in the rear bag is continuous and flat on the bottom with the width of that bottom being around 1/2 inch i think.

It sounds like one key issue is high 'tall' the rear bag should be and a lot of that is based on what i will be comfortable with when set up. I have an old rabbit ear rear bag i that is similar to the caldwell universal rabbit ear bag so i will play with that to see what seems to fit and then order something based on that.

I have 3 bags>>> on my Doctor Bag, I had them put a 1" solid bottom. On my other bags, one is 1/2" bottom and another is a "lighter bag", I use on a bench for load development, that has a 1" solid bottom also. I also have 2 "spacers" , 1 is 1" and the other is 1/2".. When laying prone on the ground, it can have many variables and so I have found it "convenient" to have multiple bags and spacers for ANY uneven ground situation.

If you would call and talk to Protektor and tell him about your stock he will make it to fit. Tell him you want the slippery fabric for the ears. Fill it with heavy sand. I like to set my gun up with the rest set in the middle range of height adjustment. Then I measure to see how high I need the bag. This way it will let you go up or down. Then you could have a spacer like ShootDots says. I made my own rest with a double rise so I have plenty of adjustment for ranges that vary uphill and down. Matt
