Which reamer

Currently have a 308 chambered with "Tompkins" reamer. Finding freebore to be too short, and must seat deeper in cases than I want. Using AI mags. Gunsmith is going to change it for me, was wondering what amount of freebore would be ideal. Not too worried about jumping smk's but wanting to be close to lands with some of the bullets that like to be. I realize there is no one universal answer but would like a good all around throat.

155 scenar is what I've been shooting. Would like to be able to use 175 smk but they need to be buried so deep that there is insufficient room in the case. Would like to be able to try a VLD style as well in the 155/175 class.

You can load up a few dummy rounds and see what ammo loaded to mag length puts the bullet base in the case. Pick the one you like best and have the smith throat it accordingly. Unfortunately, there is no "one size fits all", but you'll see how it all works and why by doing this. The problem with working around a given mag length is that it limits your ability and flexibility in regard to ideal jump/jam while maintaining a near ideal amount of bullet inside of the case.
