Which Reamer?

I've been lucky enough to acquire a Kelbly action that is currently chambered in 6mmBR with a 14 twist. (short neck) I'm going to purchase a 6mmBRX reamer for this barrel and for a 6mm 8 twist barrel that I already have. This way I can shoot short and light or long and heavy with a simple barrel change.

I also have a .224 barrel that needs to be reamed also and want to go with the 22br. Pacific Tool and Gauge has 2 reamers for the 22BR. one is Remington and the other is Norma. Please confirm if the Norma is the longer neck and the same length as the 6mmBR Lapua brass.

I'm looking forward to this project as it will be my first chambering of any rifle and will be under the tutelage of an experienced smith/target shooter. He is currently unavailable and I want to order as soon as I can. Your help would be appreciated.

You need to order your reamer with a throat that is short enough for the 68gr class of bullets if that is what you want shoot for short range. I screwed up a chamber when I went from a turned neck to a "no turn" neck as the reamer that I borrowed was for the 105gr bullets. I will cut the chamber off and re-chamber with the short thoat on that 1:12 twist barrel.

Wild Pete: I suggest you talk to Dave Kiff and tell him what you want to do, but further suggest that if you want to use the short, lightweight bullets in your 14 twist, you might want to consider a zero freebore. I've spec'd. my 14 barrel twist reamers at or very close to zero FB and the base of most bullets are sitting in the case, touching the lands, with the base of the bullet just a few thousandths above the neck/shoulder junction / far enough that if you have a "donut" it will not be a problem. With that setup, a lot of throat erosion can occur and I can continue seating to touch without the bullet falling out of the case. Works for me. ;)

Just a few suggestions:

As you have been told the short range game and the long range game require different bullets, different twist and different seating depths. You also have to make a choice of a turn or no neck turn chamber. If you are going to use the reamer once or many times for one chamber send Dave Kiff a sized virgin brass(no powder or primer) with your bullet seated how you want it. have the neck turned if you want a neck turned chamber. With boat tailed bullets don't seat the bullets boat tail/bearing surface beyond the neck/shoulder juncture(this causes fliers). let Dave Kiff at PT&G make you a reamer with the lead and freebore you desire. A custom reamer from PT&G is about $138.00. This reamer will only cut the chamer it is designed to cut.

Remember it is easier to remove metal than to put it back.

Buy your reamer with a minimum lead and freebore. $138.00 Buy a piloted throating reamer another $69.00. Now you can cut your chamber with short or long throats and anywhere between.

Thanks Gentlemen for the reply's ???, I think ;D. Anyway, I'm mulling all this around in my feeble head, trying to grasp it all and enjoying every minute of it. I've been stumped on the 6mmBRX reamer as it seems that there is several variations of it, Clymer's original vs PT&G's designs.

This is great and I appreciate the input. I'll consult most honorable sensai, the lathe master and we will decide
