Which primer for Lapua 308 Palma case

I would be most grateful if you would let me know your
choice for priming Lapua 308 palma cases.
Looking forward to hearing from you
sincerely
Filippo

Honestly, which ever one shoots best with your rifle/powder/bullet combination.

I like CCI450, BR4, and Federal match.

I developed a load with IMR 8208 XBR and CCI BR4 that gave fine accuracy and velocity with low ES/SD. When I loaded 50 rounds to validate, several rounds were >200 fps low, in 85° temps. I switched to CCI 450 and eliminated the dropouts while retaining the accuracy and consistency. I suspect that 45+ grains may be marginal for the BR4 and the 450 gave a little extra ignition. I will test the load this (San Diego) winter when temps drop into the frigid 50s. ;)

I would + 1 on all those above recommending the magnum primers (450). Most of the big cases with small primer seem to like the extra bit of kick to give consistent charge initiation as Steve said.

Anyone ever hear of a no-namer who goes by German Salazar? ;D Needless to say he has played with these small primer cases, and knows a thing or two. He has shared his findings on his blog page.

Gary, I'm glad you're enjoying the site, thanks!

Steve, I hope we'll see you here for the Arizona Palma Championship in December! It would be nice to get a burger together and talk about this fun stuff.

As you saw in your testing, the small primer .308 is a marginal setup and if the combination isn't just right, undesirable things can happen.

Someone asked about the Wolf small rifle magnum primers, please bear in mind that they are the mildest of all the small primers, notwithstanding the "magnum" designation. As much as I love them for the 6BR, they would not be my choice in the .308 case. I did my testing with the CCI BR4 which is mild but "bigger" than the Wolf. Once I go beyond that level, the hotter small primers are in the range of the Wolf large rifle primer so the question then becomes: "what have we gained?"

I may do some additional testing with it as our long-range season begins soon, but I remain pessimistic about this case. In my opinion, it increases the possibility of failure in a match while offering - at best - a minimal gain in statistical performance and one that I haven't been able to validate on paper at real distances. But I remain open-minded and willing to learn.

I also found that the cases are not quite uniform those within .003" were the best.On the other hand my son got his very best results using these Lapua palma in his TRG 22.
We use a double blind system where I do all the loading and he does all the shooting and reports the results to me.He does not know the loading etc.so there cannot be any bias.
I have used Lapua LR.Lapua palma as well as berdan primed
308.The Lapua Palma got best results,at least so far.All were short range for we do not have long range facility nearby.
The primer used is CCI 450 but we could not get any chronograph reading. It could be my son rifle preference.
Sincerely
Filippo

German's point regarding primers is well taken. If it is necessary to use a "hot" primer like the CCI 450 to achieve reliable ignition; why not use a standard LR primer? Still, it is necessary to go through all the steps to make certain I am not missing something. If good results are obtained at ~50° F, then it will fill my need.

German,
Phoenix in December is a distinct possibility. I assume it is the 16 December event? The last time I shot there it was called the Black Canyon Shooting Range. I guess it is time to visit again. In any case, it is always good to escape the brutal San Diego winter and flock with the rest of the snowbirds. ;)

Steve, the Arizona Palma Championship is December 3 - 5 with practice on the 2nd. I'll have the program posted on our website this week. www.desertsharphooters.com

It all depends of what your game is for Palma shooting it
might be irrelevant. At this time I am trying to get the smallest group possible out of this rifle and that happens all the time with lapua palma brass. It is not my choice it is the rifle's one.
