which powder thrower

I started long range bench rest 8-9 years ago and bought a bunch of stuff off ebay. That included both a LEE perfect dispenser as well as a model 3 micrometer charger from RCBS-Redding(?) I of course started using the "expensive" micrometer model. After I got rid of the balance beam scales and went to a lab balance, I only used the thrower for slightly low loads and trickle up. Then I set up a portable loading table for my office when its too cold/hot in the garage. Of course I put the Lee on it. I soon found out the Lee was way more consistent than the "good" one! So, now I use the Lee, but with a baffle in it. Only real problems are the adjustment is kind of goofy and the hopper is too small. I can deal with the adjustment and I grew to ignore the need to re-load the hopper every 50 rounds or so. I thought about the top shelf Perfect classic cast model, but the old plastic one works so well, why mess with it?

Had a Redding BR-30 and sold it. Kept my RCBS Uniflow with baffle and micrometer adjust.

As to scales, definitely need one; but... I'd say a Check Weight Set is more critical than spending top dollar. With the check set, you verify the exact weight for your load; zero your scale each time you're gonna load and you eliminate all variables.

Isolating variables is what precision shooting is all about. If all we are left to contend with is the wind; that is enough.

Go for the Lee cheapie. All their stuff works very well.

I've used virtually every powder thrower over the last 45 years, the one I kept was a Redding BR with a baffle I installed. I wrote down the powder charges for each cartridge/powder combination and so could easily reset things.

However as soon as the RCBS Chargemaster came out the Redding has been sitting in the cabinet. There are a few tricks to using the Chargemaster for best accuracy and consistency. I load for competition with it and the loads hold 1/2 moa at 1,000 in a 6.5 X 284 with good shooting conditions.

Plinking .223? My Dillon 650 powder measure works just fine because I polished the metal funnel/base to mirror smoothness and use ball powders. H335 works very well and charges stay within + or - .2 gr, usually a little closer. H335 has a decent size sweet spot and at 300 yards and in it doesn't much matter. I use bullet weights of 40 and 50 gr for plinking.

I have great luck with an older Hornady thrower that I installed an RCBS baffle in. It is the predecessor to the lock and load model. You have to work really hard to throw something bigger than + or - .1 grains. A great measure for the price.:D:(

I am looking for a good thrower as I am loading in bulk now(for a ar). And cant remember which one I had years ago. I have heard for the money the lee perfect powder measure is very good. I have looked at it and rcbbs and reeding and am not sure which route to go. Would like to hear what you all think is the best buy. Thanks
For .223/5.56 I have had excellent results with the Lee Auto Disc measure with the double disc kit. I have this mounted on my press and it outperforms both my Lee perfect powder measure and my RCBS in charge to charge consistency. The method of operation of this measure makes it very easy to maintain consistent technique which I think helps with the consistency of charge weights.

Thanks that is good info.

I have an RCBS Uniflow for right on 40 years. I tried the mic adjuster and didn't like it so I put the original back on. I agree the baffle helps greatly. I also weigh all charges. Barlow

I have an old Redding and a couple of old Lyman's and they all do pretty good with stuff like 335 and 760 but not so consistent with 4350 and the others.

A lot of it is probably my fault. I'm going to make amends for that by polishing the funnels and installing baffles.

Buy once. Neil Jones Powder Measure

As previously posted I use the RCBS Chargemaster for match loads. The reason why I no thrower I've ever used is as fast or consistent with coarse stick powders and trickling up takes time. Use of the Chargemaster has really cut down on time spent at the reloading bench, which helps prevent boredom from tedium and possibly screwing up.
