Which one - Vortex Crossfire II

Gun is a bolt action 308. Would you choose the 2-7x33 or the 3-9x40?

My brother posed this question. I’ve primarily always used Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 on my hunting setups.

But is a 40mm objective the way to go?

I have had several Vortex scopes and I would not recommend anything under their Viper line. The CrossFire II and Strike Eagle were moved on.

There are better options in a 2-7 or 3-9 scope than a Crossfire even if the budget is small. Even here in Australia better options can be had. I'd go second hand and get something not made in the PRC.

I would consider what the typical distance the game I hunt will be. Also, do I often hunt early morning and/or late afternoon. With all else being equal, the 40mm will offer an advantage of better light through put over the 33mm. The higher power of 9 over 7 may be an advantage on smaller game or help with poorer eyesight. I don't see (pun intended) a huge difference between the two. If that was my choice I would favor the 3-9x40 but only after I could have a look see through both as a comparison. The specific glass used in each of the models and the specific coating would/could effect selection for me, but then all else would not have been equal.

I wasn't satisfied with the Crossfire II - image quality was poor at short range. The Diamondback is a much better scope for not much more money.
