Which Muzzle Brake?

Hi guys,

I have a 260 coming that I'd like to put a brake on. This will be a target rig exclusively so I'm not overly worried about noise increase, more so with eliminating muzzle rise and jump.

IF possible a brake that doesn't increase as much volume would be preferred. I realize they are all loud, some louder than others.

The gun is a Magpul edition 700. 22" barrel. Will be running 140 hybrids most likely.

What have you guys used and why?

APA brakes if noise and beauty are not a concern. I run a little bastard on a Dasher and a Fat Bastard on
a 7SAUM. I think the Fat Bastard does a better job reducing recoil in my 7SAUM
than my 338 TBAC can. IF noise is not a concern to you OR others. Not feelin
a lot of love from fellow shooters when It comes out.

I use a Whitt Machine bolt on brake because I don't have a threaded barrel on my .308. Seemed to reduce the recoil by about half and tamed the bounce down especially firing from a bipod. Accuracy did improve but it may be due to the added weight or a change in harmonics. It definitely is louder and I use foam plugs plus the muffs.

True, but I find my Vais on several 6BR and 22 cal varmint guns tends to reduce muzzle flip just by reducing recoil. I like em. I did shoot a Lil basterd and it was loud, but really stopped muzzle jump. About tore my T shirt though! 6.5 SAUM...
 
I like the muzzle brakes and more the best for recoil reduction, best I have used. I have never seen accuracy effected by any of them. I would say it was not installed correctly if you see accuracy issues.
 
I have a Heathen brake on my 338 Edge. With this round my primary concern was of course recoil reduction. But as a hunting rifle I was also concerned with noise as while I'd never shoot without hearing protection, the ready around-the-neck kind I'd use on a hunt would not be up to the protection level of range gear.

The Heathen is relatively unique in its design in that while the front two ports are angled, the first one is 90 degrees. The theory is to reduce recoil effectively while using the rear port to deflect the gasses further away from the shooter.

My impression is that it delivers. It is a brake, so it is louder than not having one. But it's not as bad as many I have shot. I didn't think the relatively small 3-port brake would do the job on the big 338, but the owner promised me it would, and he was right.
 
I've owned 1 Vais and several Harrell's radial brakes. I am using a self timed Muzzle Brakes and More now. It does both of what your asking and it does it well, better than the others I've owned.

Baffle brakes like the Lil Bastard are best at reducing recoil but are also the worst for noise. Vais is a very good brake and it is one of the quietest, however ports on the bottom make for a bit of dust when shooting prone and is about 10% less effective reducing recoil than a baffle brake. So no ports on the bottom if you're shooting prone. In a nut shell baffle brakes will reduce recoil and muzzle rise the best but are going to be the worst for noise and canister style brakes like the Vais are less effective but are quieter.
 
I've run the radials at least until I started shooting prone and well your going to get dirty! I have gone to the APA breaks and couldn't be happier, they are loud BUT my 243 I can watch bullet trace at our 500 meter range.... tend to shoot more when the trace is showing lol. Had a Micro Bastard on a 6 Fat Rat and the only thing was the bolt movement on the AR made it move, Little Bastard on my 243, my little brother has one on his 260 and my buddy has one on his 6.5 CM and we have put Fat Bastards on our 300WM's my brother and I are building so have to say we are fans. Check out the Area 419 Hellfire brake. Self timing, user installable, performance is just a tiny bit better than the APA Little Bastard Gen II. Plus is that if you have a suppressor he's making adapters to allow you to swap back and forth between brake and can with no tools. I've got the APA on one rifle and the Area 419 on another, prefer the Area 419.

This is what I was going to say but can't say it better. Installation is key. barrel should be centered just like for chambering (except reversed) Thread, screw on, then bore (not drill) the hole .020 oversize). --Jerry

The JP Enterprises Recoil Eliminator was MADE for the reason and has proven itself in videos on the net. It completed my .260 Ackley.
 
The Patriot Valley Arms Mad Scientist works very well and is made to direct the blast more out than back at shooter. Very effective brake.
