Which McMillan For A Varmint Rifle

For a reference, this is my 6BR in the McMillan Varmint pattern stock, 24" barrel:

I like that. What contour barrel? Thank you

M-40 McMillan. it will fit the barrel contours you want, Or Sako Varmint
Since the Beck's bought McMillan, Their choice of stocks and inletting has gone down the tubes! Not the Company that Gale or Kelly was running!

No way I would get a flat bottom stock for a varmint rifle, BTDT......

Wouldn't do an A-3 or A-5 either, butt hooks suck with a rear bag.

I like the Varmint pattern, but it really is more at home with a 22" or shorter barrel, and no more than a Rem Varmint contour, same as the HTG/M40 IMO, which also sucks for cheek weld.

With a 26" MTU contour, the 2 1/2" wide fore end of the Marksman is better suited, as well as the extra length of the fore end.

Manners T3 is a great alternative to the Marksman:

For reference, here's the McMillan Varmint stock and their traditional HBR stock (non-EDGE pattern). The HBR fore end is 1.75" longer. I've had a few of the HTG/M40 stocks and they're pretty decent, too.

Good shootin' -Al

What contour barrel is in the Varmint stock?

Do you know if the current McMillan Varmint stock that’s available still is close to the Nesika Bay Varmint? This is what I’m leaning towards. Thank you!
Yes, its the same stock but its designed for a remington style tang. The nesika bay version was for BR tang actions.

For gophers out here your getting targets all over and a front rest just doesnt have the range of movement you need. A bipod and rear bag or a bull bag is much faster. If you have less targets or want to shoot father a rest may be better. Even with a swivel bench and a Farley, i went back to a bipod

What Al has is it. The only difference is the left port.

What contour barrel is in the Varmint stock?
It's an NBRSA HBR profile. 1.250" for 4" at the back end and then a straight taper. The taper is .024 per inch so this one @ 24" ends up at .800. With the taper and the 4" long shank, they are extremely stiff barrels. ;)

My 22BR (pic below) has a Remington Sendero contour and ends up about .850 @ 25". It's in a Kelbly's Varminter pattern stock for a reference.

FWIW, I'd suggest a plain vanilla, bread and butter 6BR with a .272 or .273 'no turn' neck and a zero freebore. With Nosler 55 gr. BTips @ 3,700+ it's simply a death ray out to the ranges you want. With a good reticle and a 250 yard zero, it's like cheatin'.

The biggest mistake I see people make is too much barrel...both length and profile. The Sendero profiles shoot crazy good and it opens up a lot of stock choices that the bigger barrels don't allow.

Good shootin' :) -Al

For our personal rifles a take off Br barrel cut back and rechambered with 0 freebore and old brass worked great. A 55 going 4k fps out of an 8 twist is about as explsive as it gets.

I have a A6 PRS that doesn’t have the Butt-hook, that rides a regular rear bag well. I don’t know if it’s still in the line since the ownership change.

Awesome! Thank you guys for the information. This will primarily be used for ground hogs, but I’d love to go West and shoot prairie dogs or ground squirrels. I’m leaning heavily towards the Varmint stock. I’m thinking I should step down my contour to like a #7 or something similar. I have a Remington 700 in a HS Pro Series M24 vertical with a 26” Lilja M24 contour chambered in .243 Win shooting 105s currently. I really like that setup but I like the feel and quality of the McMillan stocks I’ve used recently for hunting rifles. I like texturing on the grip area but not a fan of how the HS is very grippy all over and I worry about how well that rides in the bags. I like the heavy barrel and heavy rifle for sitting up and watching over a big field when carrying so that’s why I was thinking of sticking with something similar to the M24 contour on my .243 I have now. Maybe I don’t need that big of a barrel for a 6BR.

A medium Palma or a rem varmint/sendero type are plenty beefy .
Exactly. I have used a couple of light Palma taper barrels recently and they fit the stock patterns that are being mentioned here without the need to remove huge amounts of forend fill. They perform quite well in the field.

For example, this is a McMillan HTG with a light Palma taper Krieger. That rifle has several rock chucks in the 500 to 700 yard range to its credit.
