Which load??

Hi all,
I have a slight dilemma, i have 2 loads on hand that look like they will shoot well.
However would like opinion of those more experienced than myself. The following two groups were shot from 300 yds prone with a sling and peep sights. rifle is a barnard model p in an alloy stock in 308 winchester, ammunition is lapua case adi 2208 powder and 2156 sierra projectiles. the loads are 46.1 and 46.7 running a 10 thou jump, the chosen load will be used out to 1000 yds and both chronograph over 3070 fps. The two circles around the groups measure 1.25 inches and 2.5 respectively (the size of our centre and supercentre here in aus) and i claim responsability for shot no 3 in the 46.1 knew the shot was no good but still well in the bull.
Any opinion will be greatly appreciated.

Your loads are fine. You should be able to hold 1MOA at a 1000yds. Your loads are very close to what I load here in the States: 46.6gr Varget (AR2208), 2156 SMK and prepped Federal Gold Match cases.

Okay, here's what I see. You are shooting the Bull. Do you see how your impact is right on the target lines. Photo #1 looks like a pin wheel. Every shoot 1 thru 5 like right on the line. Now, here's how I know you are shooting the Bull. Look at Photo #2. Again shots 1 an 2, right on the line. Then you called 3. Look at your 4th shot. Bam! Right in the x ring, dead center. And again, shot 5... on the line. Shot 4 in photo #2 shows you got back into position, firmed up and concentrated on a good shot.

First question, are you shooting with a front sight that is open or a blade? You said “peep sights" but sometimes that means open sights like on a match or Palma rifle. Rear peep sight and front blade is usually a service rifle.

So here is what I think you need to check. At 300yds you may have to adjust your rear sight Diopter (match rifle) or stop looking at the target (service rifle). If you shoot 1000yd regularly then move in close to 300yds, I bet you are not properly seeing through your open front sight (needing rear sight Diopter adjustment) or you are looking at the target not your front blade. Fix one of those two issue depending on you rifle sights and you will be fine. You should see your groups tighten right up.

I use a ring in the front tunnel with no optical lense at all, the groups were fired at a blank card at 300 i could not see the holes in the paper i just fired for a group as i figured if i cant see the target i would not have a clue how the group was forming and could concerntrate on firing a good shot. The scoring rings i drew in after the event for comparison, i did have a friend keeping an eye on them and would let him know if the shot didnt feel right. I do however have trouble keeping a clear foresight picture and have ever since i started shooting ftr 8 years ago, have tried diopter lense however the scores suffered, i usually use a .3 eagle eye however i recently changed to a hight adjust 30mm foresight and am awaiting the arrival of the new lense. I do have a set of proper shooting frames my father no longer uses so may go for a trip to the optometrist and have a lense made thanks for the suggestion much apreciated.

I would Shoot more groups with both before you make a choice. Five groups would be the min. and ten would be better.
