Which compound to put in buttstock to add weight that's safe on the stock

i want to add a pound or so in the butt of my br stock( older mcmillian I believe) and have been told by a reputable smith that the heat generated by some materials can bubble the stock? Advice please on specific brands that will adhere well to the inside of the stock without damage. Thanks

Lead shot mixed with your favorite epoxy works great. Or just the lead by itself then put a epoxy cap over the top of that.

I used ordinary old B-B's I got at Wal-Mart. Cleaned the inside of the butt with acetone, mixed 2-part epoxy with the B-B's and it worked perfect. Messy!!

I too use led shot or anything of the sort but I mix it with Dynahair (premixed fiberglass strands). Comes with a tube of hardener. you'll find it same place where you get automotive bondo. I think even Walmart might have it. comes in short or long strands. I use the short strand stuff. Comes in a quart paint can.

The stuff does indeed warm up when activated and I never used it on Painted stocks, just plastic or fiberglass stocks before they got painted, so epoxy might be your best bet for this job.

I mix lead shot with bathroom silicone to hold it in place, figuring I could more easily remove this vs epoxy, if desired.

Lead shot "inside" a plastic baggie or two. That way, no worries about heat or being able to remove if wanted/needed. Pack it in and cover it with butt plate.
A solid bar will be heavier than loose shot.

I just recently did this. I used 3/4 copper pipe about 6 inches long, 3/4" pipe has a O.D. of 7/8", I used 7.5 lead shot and epoxied the ends. I used the pipe to be able to easily remove it. Worked great.

I have one gun with mercury recoil reducers they were made for shotgun's Larry

I drill the hole in the butt of the stock, Clean out, put a small amount of 2 part epoxy on the bottom, an ounce of #9 lead shot, a little more epoxy, then more lead shot, etc., I continue this until I get to the top of the hole. I put about a 1/4" cap of epoxy on the cap side.

Has worked great for me.

Ive even used quarters wrapped in tape, to be able to fine tune the weight. Depending on the size area, and amount of weight needed lead works fine.

we have an industrial sized sandblaster type thing at work to clean 26 inch extrusion dies between uses,,the media is not sand and not really sure what it is but it is a lot heavier than sand or lead,,I aquirred a 20 ounce gatorade bottle that weighs almost 10 lbs,,

when I but the 24 inch HV PPC bbl on my Leonard stocked Farley it was front heavy and the stock bounced on the rear bag so I took the buttpad off and filled the hole with the media from the sandblaster and it tracks really well and balances as good as one could ask,,

with the 24 inch HV and a 35xLCS and the hole filled with the shot the rifle comes in under the 13.5 pound UBR limit for custom class,,

with the LV barrel at 20 1/2 inches and no weight in the stock and the 35 x LCS scope it was a 10.5 lbs rifle,,

wish could shoot it in UBR matches as well as it is capable of shooting
