Which CCI Primer for 300 Blackout?

I'm getting ready to reload some 300 Blackout for the first time and was wondering which CCI primer to use. I have both the standard 400 and the magnum 450 primers. The reason I ask is that I will be using H110 which is a magnum powder.

Yes, both the 400 & 450 CCI primers are small rifle, I just wanted to know if it would be OK to use the CCI 450 which are magnum primers.

You can use either. Id use the 400s or br primers personally. Magnum primers are typically for use with a lot of powder in a case. A 300 blk doesnt have a lot of powder..

I don't use magnum primers but i have heard of some people using them. You might just give the regular ones a shot and if you are unsatisfied with the results try the BR's or the mags.

Try the CCI #41 Mil-Spec primers. They are designed for gas rifles with floating firing pins. I run them in my blackout with very good results, lighting up AA 1680 powder.

The std 400 works just fine igniting such a small powder charge. I even use the Rem 6 1/2's in the 300BLK with H110/W296 without problems. The only problem I have had reloading the 300BLK is the inconsistencies of military vs commercial brass. Necks on some military brass, even Lake City, need turning. The commercial brass has not had that issue. It's a great fun little round to reload but pressure will peak quickly on hot loads in the heat.

I use rem 7 1/2. Or CCI 450 (sm rifle mag)

I actually prefer the CCI in subsonic loads. For me, I saw a slight reduction in SD, with the CCI over the Remington.

I believe the Remington 6 1/2 is not suitable for high pressure loads? For example, full power supersonic blackout.

Use with caution.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I was hoping that I could use the CCI 450's just because I bought them b mistake and really have nothing else to load that would require mag primers. I do have some Rem 6 1/2 but am even afraid to use those in 223 rounds.

Don't mix brass when developing a load for this small capacity case. My LC brass capacity is 22.7 grs compared to some commercial offerings hold 25 grs. Mixing brass can and will cause pressure spikes. Quickload shows a 17K pressure difference between these two cases using the same charge of Lil Gun.

Will do rifleman700, I always sort my brass out too so I can keep consistent loads plus I usually load on the light side anyways just to save on powder. :D

Good advice wildfowler. However the REM 6 1/2 isn't alone to avoid in maximum loads.

The Rem 6 1/2 has the same cup thickness as the CCI 400 at .020" and is actually thicker than the Fed 200 primer of .019" cup thickness and just under the WIN SR primer of .021" cup thickness. I've used all of these and never experienced a pierced primer with the Blackout of modest to warm loading, even with hot loads resulting in loose primer pockets I've never had one pierce.

Having that said, if loading maximum loads or over max definitely use the CCI 450, BR4, or the Rem 7 1/2 all with a cup thickness of .025" or the Fed 205M with a cup thickness of .0225" for an extra margin of safety.

Interesting article on small rifle primers.

I have been loading 300 Blackout's for sometime now and what I like is H110 (at 18gr.)for the powder and the bullets are a range from 110gr. and 125gr. Hornady V-Max or Spire point. I have used CCI #400 and the #450 primers both work just fine, I actually like the Mag primer #450 better. The rifle I use is an AR Carbine with an adjustable gas block with standard buffer and spring.

I've loaded up about 10 different loads using different powders, bullets and primers and my best load so far has been Berger's Tactical TX 110gr FMJ over 18.3gr @ 2.250" COAL and CCI 450 primers with groups of < .750" at 100yrds. That powder load is toward the light side, the more powder I tried the worse the groups got.

It's subsonic 220 grain round nose but I was using imr4198 and at max hodgdon loads the federal brass was showing signs before the cci primers were even starting to flatten so for subs at least you can rest easy using the 400s. But they were topping out in the 900 fps area.

I've gone to cfe blk which I'm testing now and the speeds are better and at a couple tenths over book max brass and primers still look great

I just got two different 110 grain "varmint" bullets (horned and nosler) and I'm going to test them out and work up a good load for them both, so thanks for the info. Out of curiosity, what powder were you using on those loads?
