Which Cartridge for Hunting

Down the road I want re-barrel my 22-250. Which cartridge do you think would be better for hunting; 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor or 260 Remington. I already have a 280 AI and 300 WSM (that I don't use much). The re-barrel would be for deer size game and smaller and practice.

260 rem. Because you can buy Lapua brass.

I love my 260 Rem's. Lapua brass has made it even better. That said, in your situation I think I'd lean toward the 6mm for less component cost and less recoil.

I build rifles in all those cartridges. Any of the aforementioned will work well on deer sized critters. Do you reload? The 22-250 is slightly shorter than the 260. You did not mention the 243 Winchester which also could be an option. Using existing followers and bottom metal might require a little thought.

Yes, I do reload. I have a 6mmAI Rem that I let my boys use and don't shoot much myself because of the brass scarcity. That's why I didn't mention 243. The 22-250 is a Ruger. Is the short action magazine too short for high BC bullets?

If you want it for hunting the 260 would be fine. Worry more about great hunting bullets in the 6mm, 243, and Rem 260 then the High BC target bullets and you will be way ahead in satisfaction.
I suggest you check out the BC on the 120/125 Nosler partition for the Rem 260, and the 95/100 gr partitions for the 243/6mm. Run the numbers through one of the ballistic programs on the Internet and see your trajectory and energy figures with a 300 yd zero. You might be VERY surprised.

For a pure hunting round either the 260 or a 7-08. (I chose 7-08 when I made the decision a few yrs back) When I decided to build a 6mm I went with the 6SLR.

Don, He has a short action. 6.5X47 would be great as you have Lapua brass. The Creedmoor does not have great brass. I'm gathering parts for a 6mm X47L because of the brass. It sounds as if you have the heavy guns covered and a 6mm might be what you would use. The 260 Rem is a good choice if you want a run of the mill chamber and you can use Laupa brass. Look at a piece of the 6.5X47L brass. I see you are from New Mexico so this could be used for mule deer. I think you should look hard at the 260 Rem and Lapua brass. The 120-130 bullets work great for a hunting 6.5 cartridge, I hunted with a 6.5-06 and killed game with 120's.

I manage 2 ranches in south Texas and there are over 100 deer taken every year. The 2 most deer loosing cartridges for us is the 30-30 and the 243. It may be anecdotal but that is what we see. I know many guys that hunt deer with a 243 and think they are great. In the right hands a 243 will work. If someone needs to borrow a rifle I loan them a 6.5x55 which The ballistics are the same as a 260 or 6.5 creed. The 6.5s in my opinion are the best calibers for deer. I would also lean toward 260 because of lapua brass and I wouldn't count out 6.5x47 because you can run long bullets mag length without intruding on powder capacity in a short action.
