Which caliber would you recommend for 75gr Amax

I is going to be my first .22 rifle. I already have some components, but not sure about caliber. I have Brux medium palma barrel with 1-8' twist, Savage BVSS stock.

I want to shoot 75gr Amaxes. I wanted 22-65.x47, primarily because my smith friend has one and I love that gun. Also lapua brass is a big plus. But I am novice in reloading and was wondering if there are other calibers with similar specs, but easier to reload,no fireforming etc.) Speed is not a top priority for me, I would rather opt barrel longevity over speed. I was thinking of 22-243, 22-.35 or 22-250. What you think? Thank you

Need more info. What do you want to do with the rifle. Punch paper, f-class etc. and at what range? Some of the calibers you listed I put in the barrel burner class or at the very least not exactly known for long barrel life..,22-243)

Primarily for slaying paper targets and open field deer hunting withing 300 yards. For deer probably 80 grain Nosler ballistic tips.

Nosler dont make 80gr ballistic tips in 22 cal.

And if they did, I wouldnt recommend hunting deer with varmint bullets.

As for calibre for the 75gr amax, 22 dasher or 22BRX are probably your best bet. For punching paper, I would look at loading the 80gr HPBT bullets and for varminting use the 60gr vmax.

there was a bloke I was talking to over email from your side of the pond
who used a Savage varmint gun factory S/S in .223 with the 1:9.
and he rechambered it to a 22 BR with a short neck

it wasn't a dasher as it retained the factory 30 Deg shoulder but he shortened the neck up a fair bit

I dont know if that has a name or not- but all he did to form brass was use a bushing die to create a falsh shoulder to chamber against and fire form
Then he used a 22 BR neck die and a Body die as his die set

Pat thats the 22BRX. 0.210' neck shoulder blown forward but still at same angle. Use standard 22BR dies with a spacer under the die to suit.

Very accurate, best so far is 3 into 0.172' at 100m, 31.8gr 2208 69gr nosler CC's 3354fps with a lilja 10 twist.

What he said.

Call ecomomy gunsmiths and ask for Jake, he shoots a 22x47L with the 75 gr. Amax, and he has had great results on deer out to 600yds. He really likes the 22x47L and I'm sure he can help you out and he is not far from Pittsburgh.

While I've never had a .22 BRX, Dasher or .22/6.5x47, I am really happy with the .22-250 AI. It gets my vote because you can chamber factory .22-250 ammo for fireforming, its fast, fires standard .22-250 ammo extremely well, and with an 8tw rate, you can shoot the heavy A-Maxes, VLDs, and Lapua Scenars.

Hey 123 Driver. My vote goes for the 22BR. It doesnt take a lot of fiddle-farting around to make. Get 6br Lapua brass, use a 22 BR die, and just shorten the case a little to 1.520-1.525 inches, dump 28.3 grains of Varget top it with a 75 grain a-max bullet and it will be one of the most accurate rifles in you arsenal. You can either use the CCI 450 primers or the Fed 205M. Velocities won't burn out the barrel that quickly. But at 600 yards in competition, my 22 BR shot 2.4inch group of 5 shot group.

ALO, what velocity are you getting from the 75gr. Amax in your 22br and what is your barrel length? Do you have to turn the necks?
Drags

Hey Drags, I'm not sure of the velocity, but I would image it is about 2700 to 2800 FPS. ,I'm not really into hyper-velocity loads.)After spending almost 300 bucks for a barrel and that does not even include the chambering, crowning, and headspacing it, I want to get more than 800- to 900 rounds out of it. The barrel is 1-8 Krieger and is 26 1/2 inches long. Jim Kelbly and Greg Walley do most of my gunsmithing work and we discussed shaving the necks or just use a standard neck. We agreed that we would use the standard reamer that does not requiring neck trimming. It appears to be just as accurate as any other 22BR I have shot.
