which bullet weight?

Is there a way to determine which bullet weight,s) might work well with a particular barrel twist?
I have a Savage LRPV, 22-250 cal 26” long barrel with a 1:9 twist.
Shooting 100 to 300 yards with a 50gr bullet is not producing decent results using Varget, I4064 and H4895.
Best I can do off a rest is about .750 at 100 yards – and the patterns increase as the distance increases.
How do you go about figuring out what bullet weights MAY work better than another?

Your powder choices are all wrong for that bullet weight...too slow. H322 is simply fantastic, H335, and N-133 will give you blistering speeds with extreme accuracy.

The varget with 23-24g of Varget has been reported to be fantastic with the 69's.

You did not mention if you are a target shooter or a hunter.

With the 55's, a case full of N135 is unreal fast and super accurate, you will push the limits on the 223 with this combo getting 3500 out of the 55's. Use BR4 primers, ci 450's, or 7 1/2's.

I'd go with the 75 A-max in that 9 twist.

Now that I have the time, I’m more of a target shooter than a hunter….. although I was severely bitten by the prairie dog shooting bug this past June.
One of the rifles I took on the trip was a Savage LRPV in 223, also 1:9 ) which gave excellent results at 200 yards and a bit beyond with a 50gr bullet.
I got the 22-250 to be able to reach out a bit more.
In testing the 22-250 with the 50gr bullets, I’m getting about 3830fps with 36.7gr of I4064, and about 3720fps with Varget; both with decent results, but nothing to brag about.
I just thought that if someone could tell me how to figure what weights work better with this twist in 22-250cal, I might tighten the groups up.

You have to know how long the bullet is though.

I would probably try some Berger 80gr VLDs.
They are 1.09" L. They would probably do better in a 1:8 twist.

It might be right on the boderline with a 1:9 twist.

I think those powders you listed are too fast for the 22-250 he has. They are great powders for .223 however.

First off, I don't have a 22-250. That said, I don't think the weight per-se is the problem, I suspect the rifle just doesn't care for that particular bullet. You should try another bullet. I think you'll have a range of weights to use, probably could go up to 75s as someone suggested or even 80s if you want to. The 22-250 should be able to get up to 3300fps with a 75 A-Max,26"bbl), according to Hornady #6. That probably won't have a stability problem in the 9 twist.

I measured some .224 heavy projectiles, you can try the cals with them if you like:
Berger 80VLD, randomly checked 5, ranged from 1.109"-1.119"; says 8 twist on box
Hornady 75 A-Max, randomly checked about 10, ranged from 1.105"-1.109"; says 9 twist on box
Hornady 80 A-Max, randomly checked 5, ranged from 1.151"-1.165"; doesn't say twist
Berger 75VLD, these are sorted, recent ones 1.047"-1.052"; rated 9 twist
Sierra 80MK, also sorted, recent ones 1.058"-1.060"; says 7-8 twist on box

Keep in mind that the theoretical twist rate isn't cast in stone necessarily IMO-look at the 80SMK requiring a 7 or 8 twist. They actually work very well in my 9 twist 223. I'm not saying that they will work in all 9s, but rather if your combo is on the edge by the theory, it's worth checking in the real world. Now if you had a 12 twist, then I wouldn't bother trying the heavy ones.

You probobly need heavier bullets. I use 36.2 gr H4895 behind a 52 gr Berger varmint in a 26" 14 twist 22-250 that shoots .2's and 3850 fps. at 100 yds. I would try heavier bullets with that fast a twist, probobly 75gr ish.
