Which bullet weight for a short barrel?

Bonjour,

This is my first time on this forum and i didn't find a place to introduce myself, so i do it here, sorry!

I am french (2nd sorry), and i shoot since i walk.

Done.

i am thinking of a new 6br rifle (not to much heavy, i want to shoot stand up), with a 20" barrel to shoot out to 300m 90% of the time.
It will be a 8" twist, what should i use? 105gr or lighter like 60-80gr?
What to choose: good weight/good B.C. or hight speed???

Thanks in advance for your help!

Merci.

Fabien. ;)

Welcome!

A 1 in 8" twist will stabilize a 105gr bullet. You will give up some velocity with a 20" barrel.

At 300m, BC is starting to become a factor.

The choice depends on your purpose. Target shooting, hunting?

Fabien,
For starters, welcome aboard! You'll learn a great deal on this site and get all sorts of recommendations and at least, ideas that might help you in your efforts.

And along those lines, I'm not sure what exactly are your goals with a 6mmbr. But if best accuracy or competition shooting is at the top of your list, in my humble opinion, a 20" barrel is NOT the way of achieving that goal, especially in 6mm. Simply, you are giving up way too much velocity once the bullet leaves the barrel. My Savage Model 12 Benchrest 6mmbr has a 29" barrel (1:8 twist) that I use almost exclusively at 100 - 200 yd shoots. She REALLY loves a Bart 68 gr Ultra bullet being pushed by 31 grs of Vhita Vuori N133. Now admittedly barrel length alone generally isn't an overwhelming factor as I've seen and shot many 6mmbr's with 25" barrels. But a 20 incher is gonna give up more accuracy and performance than I'm willing to give away. Just something to consider. But good luck and have fun either way.

Bonsoir Fabian,

It is only for traget shooting.
i am not looking for 1/4moa at 100m, and it is not for competition.

Right now i own a rem700/6br/26"barrel; 8"twist/AICS. it is shooting very well out to 850m (subMOA when there is not that much wind) and even 1000m (~1.5MOA).

BUT i don't enjoy anymore shooting prone with bi-pod, a bag or what ever, so i sell it, :'( because it is too much heavy for what i want to do : shooting gong at 200 or 300m, sit position or stand up.

I don't need a lot of speed for those distance.
I don't think i need hight performance bullet, i'll probably choose something light and cheap.

Thank you to everybody to welcome me.
:)

You don't need an 8-twist to shoot "fast & light"...maybe a 12-twist would be better for all but the heavy bullets. Your barel and bullets seem to be at cross purposes; fast twist and heavy bullets would be better for long distances. But, if you are not exposed to very windy conditions, mid to lightweight bullets will definitely get there!

8-twist=heavy bullets
12-twist=everything up to 80 grains, +/-
